Cool cops

I teach a Junior Achievement class to 3rd grade. I had my first session last week. Since I don't wear a uniform anymore, I decided I'd wear my Spiderman tie for the kids. They loved it. The class ends at the end of school so several of the kids gathered around me to see my badge & to talk to me. One little boy said that he had Spiderman on his PlayStation 2. I told him that all I had was PlayStation 1. Another little boy asked, "You have a PlayStation? Do you have any kids?" I told him that I had two sons but both were grown & married. Another kid asked, "Then who plays with the PlayStation?" I said that I do. I told them I have a golf game, a car race game, Rainbow Six, Monopoly, & several others. One little girl standing nearby said, "Gosh, I didn't know cops could be fun." I said, "sure we have fun." She said, "I just thought you caught bad guys & told kids not to do bad stuff." I said, "Well, we do that too but we like to have fun."

We always need to let people know, particularly kids, that we're people too.

the cops have come to visit some domestic stuff at my apartment. they ARE different people.

they carry guns, the right to use lethal force, they carry chemical spray and a club. they have backup. fast cars and uniforms. they don't joke or kid around......

why? because they are dealing w/ the scum of the earth, the lowest of the low. they are handling problems that they didn't start.

inbetween calls.......cops are cool people. dont' *#&% w/ them on duty.

When I worked the Housing Projects in our city, I carried my sketchbook in my gearbag. The kids all got a kick out of the comic book characters and musclecars I like to draw.

I have a couple of Looney Tunes ties I'll wear if I get a plain clothes position.

A few years back I bleached my hair really blonde. It is always cut to a grade 1/2 back and sides and either 1 or 2 on top. Looked cool, not unprofessional, kinda looked like I'd been surfing for about a year without a break. I also wear a leather necklace with a pewter manatee on it, (don't worry, got a snap release on the back for safety). In the summer, our uniform is a short sleeve white shirt and no tie. Soooo many people I dealt with made a comment about the way I looked (not one detrimental) Most said that it was about time coppers looked a bit cooler. Some people over here think that we have to look like we're still living in the 1950's.

While I was uniform, I used to do Character Counts where we went to the elementary schools and taught it to 3rd graders. The first day is dedicated to question and answer and to acclimate them to seeing a uniform. The conversation turned to Playstation and they were amazed that an "old man" who was also a cop played video games.

I don't wear your typical striped or paisley ties. I wear Jerry Garcia's and Cocktail Colors mostly. When I did a speech for a group of Weebelo's, I wore my American flag tie. The kids and parents loved it and made some good comments about it.
