The next regulation on N.C. State Troopers.

Wow.... No way in hell would someone get my cell phone bill. They don't need to know who I am calling and when. I understand the use during work but there are times where you have to make calls during work because of the hours of operation, etc.

If they are going to do this for the Hwy Patrol, they need to do it for every person in every department that works for the City, etc.

Unless the department is paying the bill, they have no right to see it.
The beatings will continue until morale improves.

NO way they are getting my bill. Hell they would see about 10 calls a night on my phone while on duty.

The first to my buddy to see where we were eating right out of roll call

2nd to the wifey to see how her day was going

3-7 to my Sgt saying "You're not going to believe this, you may want to get over here."

8 from the wifey saying goodnight

9 Same friend asking where to meet for coffee

10 to the Sgt asking if he knows if it's 5 minutes until it's time to call us in, just in case he forgets to check the time.

Sometimes there are about 13 calls , the other 3 being to our Mental Eval unit / State Parole / DCFS.

A way around the dept having your whole cell record is to get a pre-paid phone at the local stop and rob for $20 and get a few hundred minutes. Carry that on duty and turn in that call log. Too bad NC is an at will state cause any union worth its butt would be all over this one.

wow that's really crossing the line!
I really don't see that rule sticking around...either a lawsuit or something else will pop up to challenge it's validity.

They'll get mine only if they agree to pay said bill. Otherwise it's all mine.

WOW that is shocking. If I worked there I would pay to get an extra phone. Then I would never use it and give them that bill. Unreal!

A different point of view here.. Don't carry your cell while working, this only applies if you want to. I know in today's age it is hard to imagine, but then again it was not that long ago that we all got along just fine without a cell phone. I am not saying I agree with this because I don't, I am just saying this is only something you have to do IF you choose to carry it on duty. If not carrying your cell phone on duty will have a negative impact on your work performance then that is going to be something the department is going to have to address and take corrective action on if they do not want the performance or response time to suffer. Again, this is not something I agree with but it is also not something they have to do in order to keep their jobs, its only if they want to carry a phone while working. In a lot of manufacturing facilities you are not allowed to carry a phone, in some being caught using one on the shop floor is grounds for immediate dismissal, carrying a cell phone is not a right..more of a piece of mind perk. Everyone loves the ease of a cell phone and a lot of us have given up landlines, but again.. it really was not long ago that there was not the big boom of cell phones there is today and we all survived

                    Stay safe

ETA: Let me make my point of view clear, I personally am against not allowing people to carry cell phones BUT.. As a employer I can say that I do restrict the use of them while working. I allow all of my employees to carry one if they choose but only to take calls or make quick ones home ect. I absolutely do not allow texting while working with zero exceptions. It is to hard to allow a "little" texting because you always run into the guy who is always playing with his phone and when you are employing people it is important to keep a even keel, you can't allow some to do it and some not to do it. But again, if someone has a few minutes and wants to make a quick call to check on the kids I have ZERO issues with that at all.

You would not have to turn your bill over unless you wanted to carry on duty

Interesting point, what grounds would the lawsuit be based on? I know of several facilities where the use of a cell phone while working is a discharge level offense, what right is being violated by restricting the use of a cell phone while working? I am not disagreeing with you, just curious where you are coming from... And again, I think it is BS.. but not sure where the violation applies legally.

But I am betting legally they can restrict the use or carrying while they are paying you. Its not their right to see it but I am thinking it is their right to set in place work rules while they are paying you.

I guess one thing I would like to know is what is the harm? If they are only looking to see how much usage it gets during a shift what are you afraid of? I am thinking of it and I cannot think of one cell phone bill in all these years I have had that I would be afraid of someone seeing.

It is ironic to see a group of cops not wanting to consent to a search

That's the most reasonable situation: If they're paying for it, they can see the bill. Else, no.
