  • Got to see the President!!!!!!!!!

The big man came through my jurisdiction yesterday. I was in charge of route security down one of roads he came down. Actually all I got to see was a shadow in a long really cool motorcade. It was an experience anyhow!

That's better than nothing. At least you got to see part of him.

When Clinton came to our city and gave a speech at our concert park I was assigned a post on the perimeter, (aka watching the bushes), the Secret Service set up a large "no man's zone" between my post and the crowd and then advised me that a black Chevy Suburban containing the President's personal swat team would enter my area and set up a post after the arrival of the motorcade.

The Secret Service advised me that this is a VERY serious detail and I was to watch the perimeter (bushes) and NOT turn around towards the stage as they had those areas covered nor was I to interfere with the actions of the swat team.

The motorcade arrived and sure enough a big black Chevy Suburban with blacked out windows pulled up and parked about 50 feet to my left. Guys in jumpsuits, with radio headsets on carrying MP-5's got out and were mingling about BUT, I diligently stayed at my post watching the perimeter (bushes). Wow, this is serious stuff!

After a few minutes of their arrival I heard something...pssst, pssst,.. where's that sound comming from I thought to myself... then I heard it again.. PSST.. it was comming from my left.. looking to my left, just other other side of a bush there is was! The black Chevy Suburban with it's drivers side front window down, the operator sitting there with the BIGGEST box of Dunkin' Donuts I've ever seen!!!
PSST, wanna a donut?? he asked.

I almost busted a rib trying not to laugh out loud!

I used to have a pic of myself, a secret service agent and president Reagan on the DMZ in Korea when he visited there in '83. I was one of 50 hand picked MPs who served as his security platoon. Needless to say the pic and the pic of all 50 of us was ruined in a flood. I still have the jacket we got and the letter signed by a four star. Well I have the memory too.

I met a CHP officer who used to regularly escort President Reagan when he drove from Edwards to his ranch in Santa Barbara. Whenever they arrived at his ranch he always shook the hands of all the CHP officers and thanked them for their assitance. Must have drove the detail guys nuts having the President walk up to a bunch of guys with loaded guns, cops or not.

I envy your experience Klar. RR is one of my all time favorite presidents.

I actually got to meet Stormin Norman at a banquet in 1992. It was pretty neat, he wasn't one of my favortie people, but it was still kind of cool meeting someone who actually help make some history.
