    San Francisco Hosts 'Masturbate-A-Thon'

    Mon May 5, 2003 10:23 AM ET

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - More than 100 men and women gathered in famously liberal San Francisco this past weekend for what organizers said was the city's second annual public "Masturbate-a-Thon."
Organizers said they have taken the event "from the sheets to the streets," offering volunteers -- 18 years or older -- the opportunity to overcome their inhibitions in "a safe environment" and raise money for charity.

Horace Santry, 55, said the Friday night event was his first. "I have a lot of anxiety, but doing this among a group of like-minded people does make it easier," he said.

Men and women ranging in age from the early 20s to the 50s, mingled at a local performing arts center in San Francisco's South of Market district, known for artists, galleries and nightclubs, before getting down to business.

To the strains of soothing new-age music, the men and women -- a number of them couples -- were shown into rooms for men, women or both.

"This is an effort to counter centuries of censure, to make masturbation more fun and to make it more accessible," said Thomas W. Laqueur, a professor of history at the University of California at Berkeley and author of the recent "Solitary Sex: A Cultural History of Masturbation," in a telephone interview before the event.

The event is a fund-raiser for the local Center for Sex and Culture, a non-profit organization that provides sex education.

San Francisco Masturbate-a-Thons have raised more than $25,000 over the past five years, said Center co-founder Robert Lawrence.

The event has inspired others in several U.S. states and countries, from Alaska to Germany, in which participants raise money in the privacy of their homes.

I wonder who 'had a hand' in keeping count?

          No.

But I suppose if we were to label this "disgusting" and a "perversion," that too would be wrong and intolerant. [Wink]

Of course not Lictalon (ps - please check your PMs). And I'm sure we'll be able to identify these sick participants by their hairy palms and white canes.

Look at it like this: If they're masturbating, they aren't breeding.....

Well, considering this was held in San Francisco, I'm not the least bit surprised. -

I agree with Tprspouse, it's disgusting. I see nothing wrong with masturbation, but doing it publicly and saying you're raising money for charity??? Gimme a break.

I thinks it's time to stop beating around the bush! These people should get a grip ! I think this activity belongs in private. What would happen if a child came along? I don't mean to be a jerk , its just my opinion. This is definitely a hard topic!!!

Well, they were in private (somewhat). They weren't doing this on the streets, and it didn't seem to be open to the public.

Had it been in public (or if it was), then I would be very strongly opposed to it. But, then again, I'm quite sure that even in SF, public masterbation is illegal and they would have been promptly escorted away by the police had they actually done it in a public place.

In private, well, I think its bizarre (to say the least), but as long as they're all adults, they've got a right to do it.

I wouldn't do it (unless of course, the other people involved were, say, the Swedish bikini team -- they might be able to convince me to join in ).

So, do they raise money in the same manner as walk-a-thon? Do they get their neighbors to pledge money, lets say $1.00 a stroke, and do they have certified judges count each stroke, will it ever become televised and if so who will be the host, Jerry Lewis???....

Quite frankly, why would anyone care if they raise money in this manner? I didn't read where they were forcing people to participate, or even attend.
