After a nine day deliberation, I suspect the jury was deadlocked, and compromises were made to get it over with.

That makes sense, yes... All the same, how anyone of sound judgement can consider this mere manslaughter... I mean, I can understand if they said it wasn't pre-meditated murder, but...

I have unfortunately witnessed a jury screw up even worse than this on a murder case. I think an IQ test should be part of the screening process.

'California' and 'sense' don't belong in the same sentence....

There is NO WAY to predict what the hell a jury might do. I've seen people convicted on what even I would consider was a flimsy case and people who were blatantly guilty and caught dead-to-rights set free. I know that the American justice system is also referred to as "not perfect, but the best one we've got" but the jury system is hugely flawed, IMO.

Look, this is the same county where a young woman stabbed a guy 27 times (I think it was in '91), killing him, admitted to it, and the jury gave her an ADW. They decided that the main witness was an accomplice, though there was no evidence of that. With her custody credits while awaiting trial, she spent all of nine months in state prison.

The juries here never cease to amaze me. I have sat through 60 or 70 jury trials as bailiff and finally learned to let it go in one ear and out the other. Unfortunately, the juries do the same thing.

And from the lovely defense attourney

                quote:

"It is part of a societal problem. These kids were out on the street at 1:20 in the morning, in the wrong place at the wrong time. My biggest (complaint) is that anyone used a gun. I wish handguns were banned."

Of course this is about gun control not gang's, not murder, but gun control

Do the name O.J. strike a familiar tune? No barf emoticon. Too bad.

I did like how the gun got blamed.

I think we should just kick California out of the country and let them do their own thing. We could just make a "West" Carolina so we don't have to change the flag.
