  • Man gets a ticket then runs over two bike cops..

No brake marks at the scene
BOISE - Ada County prosecutors say a Buhl man accused of hitting two state troopers with his pickup Thursday afternoon, yelled "shoot me, just shoot me" moments after ramming into them in the median of Interstate 84.
Idaho State Police believe David Turnovec, 29, intentionally hit two motorcycle officers with his truck.
The troopers were injured just after 4 p.m. Thursday after being struck head-on by a pickup truck along I-84 near Gowen Road. The men, Cpl. John Vance and Sgt. Chris Duggan, were on motorcycle patrol and were parked in the median of the highway facing east. Police say there were at least 30 feet from the shoulder.
Turnovec is charged with two counts of aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer and one count of use of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.
Turnovec was initially booked into the jail on an attempted murder charge, but a spokesperson said they later revised the official charges.
During his arraigned Friday afternoon, prosecutors revealed more details about Turnovec.

    David Paul Turnovec

They say he was staying at a local motel, but was supposed to check out today. Turnovec has been hospitalized for schizophrenia and discharged from the military.
He was reportedly not on any type of medication yesterday and may have been off his meds for some time.
Around noon Thursday, Turnovec was cited by a Boise Police patrol officer for speeding and driving without insurance. Less than four hours later, witnesses say he was driving erratically and speeding on westbound I-84, weaving in and out of traffic. He then veered off the interstate and directly into the officers.
"Just in looking at the tire marks, he made no braking, he took no evasive action to try to avoid the troopers on their motorcycles. The steering and the tire marks led right to where the bikes were parked. And in fact, a little bit of a correction right at the last minute to get both of them. Originally, they thought the vehicle was just pulling over for a motorist assist or question or something that happens frequently, but he actually had a little bit of time and actually attempted to get off his bike before impact. Sgt. Duggan didn't have that lead time and was on his bike at impact." said ISP Lt. Brian Zimmerman.
After the crash, Turnovec jumped out of his truck and started yelling at police. Prosecutors say he want the officers to shoot him. They believe his anger from the earlier traffic citation may have contributed to his behavior.
Turnovec's mother and stepdad live in Buhl, but family members say they have not heard from him in more than a year and live in fear that he will come home. They keep a gun under their pillow just in case.
The two injured troopers were taken to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise.
Cpl. Vance has since been treated for his injuries and released. Sgt. Duggan remains hospitalized in serious condition with broken leg.
Police said they tested Turnovec to determine if he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Those results are not available yet.
Idaho State Police initially said the investigation would be turned over to another police agency due to a conflict of interest, but now say they are leading the investigation.
We also learned today that Sgt. Duggan's wife is employed by the Ada County prosecutor's office.
Turnovec is being held in the Ada County Jail on $500,000. He is due back in court on Nov. 6 for a preliminary hearing.

The fact that someone like that is behind the wheel makes me want to stay home more often.

Godspeed to the officers in their recovery -- they should have given the flake his wish.
If I tell you what I know, I'd have to kill you. Fortunately, I don't know much.

Futurelaw, once you get into the LE field, you might begin to understand the morbid sense of humor that some of us possess.

I think Hank's joke was misunderstood, too. I think he was suggesting they should have granted the moron's wish before he said it a second time.

One wonders if his mental troubles were a result of action overseas, or if the military discharged him before he was deployed.

What a jerk, that is not the way to handle a complaint. I hope the Sergeant makes a quick and speedy recovery.

Thats no joke.they should've been shooting before they were hit. If i see a truck coming at me, thats about the time i think deadly force is justifyable, but ofcourse someone would have some complaint of how the officers should have stepped out of the way of the truck and tasered the driver instead of shooting him

Very true, after holding in tears and wanting to "tune-up" a suspect in a 2 year old childs death, i found myself along with other officers joking about the situation a little later that night. Unfortantly it's the only way to deal with hard scenes like this sometimes.

                        Glad these troopers are OK'

Such is life. When things get to big to handle we do make light of it to cope. I'm happy that the officers are ok and will more than likely go on to bust a few heads themselves....

The fact that his family keeps a gun near by in case he decides to come home after a year says something about this nutcase.

So who thinks that he's going to be 'unfit to stand trial due to mental insanity' (or something along those lines) and sent to the nut house instead of prison?
