  • Elderly bank robber strikes in San Diego County again

    October 10, 2009 | 9:50 am

A man described as in his 70s robbed a U.S. Bank branch inside a Vons supermarket in the Carmel Valley neighborhood of San Diego on Friday, police said.

It was the fourth bank robbery in recent weeks in which the robber was a man of advancing years.

On Aug. 29, a robber in his 70s struck the U.S. Bank in Santee. On Sept. 11, a robber in his 70s, with an oxygen tank on his back, robbed a San Diego National Bank branch in La Jolla.

And on Sept. 14, a man with a cane and claiming to have a bomb in his briefcase robbed the Bank of America branch in the City Heights neighborhood. Arrested moments later, Michael Casey Wilson, 69, has admitted the crime to reporters but pleaded not guilty in court. He said he needed the money to pay his mortgage.

In Friday's robbery, the man handed a teller a demand note and said he had a gun, although none was seen. He escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Friday's suspect may also be responsible for the La Jolla and Santee robberies, officials said.

Increase the Social Security benefits and maybe this won't happen.

I guess you could say the same thing about increasing welfare payments so that people on welfare would not commit crimes.

Most of those areas are well-to-do....I'm betting it has more to do with reverse mortgages then social security.

Funny how quickly they turned to crime to solve their problems though, isn't it?

Regarding another one of the cases, I read that the man had a wife who was too young for medicare and they could not afford her medical bills.
