  • Police K-9 victim to 9/11 attacks

K-9 Sirius was killed on September 11th 2001. He was known as a "fallen officer" and was killed in Tower Two, where Port Authority's Police Station was located. He was a bomb detecting K-9 for the NY/NJ Port Authority Police Department.

His handler was Officer David Lim, who told Sirius that he will be back to get him after leaving Sirius' kennel in the basement of Tower Two to help other officers. Unfortunitally, Officer Lim never made it back to retrieve Sirius. He was stuck in the falling debries of Tower One and was pulled out by rescue crews about five hours later.

On January 22, 2002, Sirius' body was recovered and Officer Lim rushed to the scene to help. Sirius received full Police Honors and his remains were cremated.

His badge number was 17 and he was born in January 1997.

A new beginning for Ofc Lim-

He has a new K-9 partner, a black lab named Sprig. They are currently assigned to the Holland and Lincoln tunnels. Sprig is also an Explosive Detection dog.

    RIP Sirius

As an aside to this, like the war dogs of VietNam, all of the S&R dogs used at the towers died of respiratory problems shortly (relatively speaking) after their deployment. Sadly, many officers that naturally relied on them, have forgetten them......

Painting of Sirius and photos of the painting being given to his handler by the artist Deb Stonebraker.

I remember that being a headlining news story when they brought Sirius out. Full honors indeed, they carried him down a corridor of Fire and Police saluting, showed it live. As an animal lover, I was/am proud, I forgot who said it, but the saying goes "you can judge a society by the way they treat their animals", right then and there, we were tops.
