    Question about Bootleg DVD's

We seized a bunch of them from a guy selling them out of his front yard. Is there someone specific that we should contact with the MPAA or maybe the FED's?

    Any info would be appreciated.

Seems that you may have the right guys to talk to as indicated above. I'm pretty sure FBI investigates copyright infringement. At least that's what I read on the Disney Cars movie I watched this morning with my little one.

When I worked major fraud cases with LASD I had a couple major cases of counterfeit music, one being the largest case in the country. The industry takes this very seriously if its a major case with thousands or in my case millions of counterfeit recordings. They have some excellent investigators that can provide all the expertise for court.

In my major case in 1989 the suspects home was used just for the making of counterfeit music tapes, there was hundreds of thousands dollars worth of the highest quality recording equipment thru out the house. All of the major parties were convicted of Felony crimes and in the end the RIAA got all of the recording equipment and also got the house thru the federal court.

I had one major case in 1989 where we proved that the proceeds of counterfeit music was going to the Palestine Liberation Org.

As already mentioned, Motion Picture Assn have great investigators. They go after these people regardless the size of the seizure. I recently dealt with an investigator who was retired FBI. The U.S. Atty in D.C. deal with these cases all the time. If you need some numbers shoot me an IM.

I like the commericials that start with "you wouldn't steal a car. You wouldn't steal a purse. Why should you steal movies!" Like bootlegging is the same as stealing a car! I don't think its a big deal. If the feds wanted to stop it so bad, all they have to do is sit in some barbershops and wait for the movie man to walk in....

You're right it's not the same as stealing a car. A stolen car, on average, is anywhere between 10-40 thousand dollars. The loss to the movie industry can be in the hundreds of thousands. The loss of intellectual property (patents) is the only loss addressed in the Constitution, so you figure out how important it is.

Thanks FJDAVE. I passed the info on to the investigating officer.

After Saturday I was off for the holiday. Forgive me for not checking the forum.

Outstanding! I'm glad he can help. I'm trying to talk him into registering for O.com so others can use his vast knowledge and experience.
