  • Lefty's

I've noticed that it seems that several people on this forum are left handed. I was reading some trivia on left handers and it said that a higher percentage than the average of engineers, machinists, doctors, cops even LAYWERS(dang it !) and a few others tend to be left handed.

On one shift on the sherrifs dept., out of 5 officers, 3 of them are left handed.

Looking at the reserves in the meeting last night, I noticed that of 8 people sitting at the table, 4 of them,(myself included)are left handed.

When looking at other cops, it suprises me to see how many wear their gun on the left side. Im sure there are others that are left handed but wear their gun on the right side...like I do.

So...just out of curiosity... how many of yall are leftys ?

I'm a lefty, although I write Rh'ed. Thanks to those nuns in grammer school- "The left hand is the Devil's hand you evil little boy!" Usually followed by a ruler across the knuckles. The result is I have extremely bad penmanship.

Being LH'ed did cause a few problems over the years. The nuns would have been proud of the Marine Corps. It was three days into rifle marksmanship classes (and a lot of push-ups) before my DIs would let me be a lefty.

I am Left Handed, but I shoot Right Handed for some reason. Doesn't make sense, it's just more comfortable.

I can use both, but I prefer my right. Something about always told growing up to use the right hand. I still have a 2nd grade report card saying uses left hand to much.

I write, eat, shoot carbines and rifles left handed. Play racket sports, shoot a pistol and shotgun right handed.

Wierdest damn thing tryiing to explain that to folks. It works though but gives range people fits.

You guys that shoot right handed that are left handed probably are right eye dominate.

It makes a difference. My youngest shoots left handed even though he is right handed because he is left eye dominate.

To instinctivley shoot and to be accurate you must use your dominate eye. If you are using the wronng eye and the wrong hand, you'll likely never achieve your full potential.

I am right handed, left eye dominant. I shoot long guns left handed, handguns right handed.

What was the test to show which was the dominant eye, I can't recall offhand?

Put your thumb out at arms length center to your body.

Focus both of your eyes on a point beyond your thumb.

                        Now close one eye.
Look at the same point beyond your thumb.

If your thumb seemed to "jump" position, that is your weak eye.

If your thumb stayed in the same spot, that is your dominate eye.

Do it with each eye several times. Usaully the dominate eye is pretty evident.

Lots of shooters seem to have problems with the dominate eye taking over. If you are shooting left handed and your right eye is dominate, you are "cross" shooting. It tires the eyes quickly and tires the brain and it naturally trys to compensate for this.Same goes for people that are right handed and left eyed dominate. After pointing this out to people and having them switch hands to that of the dominate eye, their score at the range will usually improve.

I come from a family of mainly left handed gear heads(my Dad, my brother, at least 2 of my cousins). My Mom was also left handed.

I'm just a mixed up kid:

                          *write and eat right handed.
                          *throw right handed
                          *fire handguns right handed
                          *fire long guns left handed
                          *handcuff left handed
                          *shovel left handed
*I'm a drummer; I play the traps right handed, but hold my sticks for marching drum or concert drum left handed.
*shoot a bow and arrow or slingshot left handed
*shoot a pool cue left handed

I'm left eye dominant, but the pits to that is, that's my weak eye(20/70). I learned to keep both eyes open, and focus to aim a rifle. Sweet trick for distance shooting. Although those bozos on the Army rifle ranges tried to tell me I was nuts, I showed them when I always scored Expert.

My folks both had a mug which read "Lefties have rights, too!" And you could only read that mug if you held it left handed.

Dad loved the day I found him some left handed tin ships. And Mom loved those sprial notebooks made for left handed people(don't you hate that wire biting into your arm?).

For you lefties who didn't know; look up Remington's web site, and see what they have for left handed long guns.
Never make a drummer mad- we beat things for a living!

Left handed......... part of one of the few minorities it's ok to discriminate against.

The only things I do right handed are shoot a bow and play a guitar. Learned both of those right handed. Other than that, it's all left handed.

That reminds me of an interesting thing I once heard. Most people who play guitar play right handed because they mainly make only them one way.
Most drummers (which I was, haven't played in afew years) are ambidixtres, probably spelled wrong. Thought it was interesting.
