  • Liberal BAD conservative GOOD

Most in LE jobs are conservative from what I have seen/heard.

My question is, were most of you conservative BEFORE you joined LE or did your point of view change?

As a non-LEO, my primary reason for leaning to the right is TAXES and their direct relation to GOVERNMENT WASTE.

I know, I work for the government. We waste more time planning meetings about meetings to discuss our previous meetings than anything else.

In fact, we have a 'meeting coordinator' who gets paid to make sure we know which meetings we need to attend.
Ignorance can be remedied, stupidity cannot.

I'm not really either. Some of my views are very liberal (drugs, death penalty) yet others are quite conservative (guns, taxes, welfare). I probably come closest to being a libertarian although I think some of the Libertian ideas are just downright nutty.

Being a cop has firmly cemented my view that the drug war is futile and does more harm than good (I won't say more - I know this is taboo). I've also gone further right on gun control where I used to be middle of the road.

Okay... let the spam wars begin

Before I became a LEO, I was conservative on most issues. After becoming a LEO, I slowly became liberal on most issues. I was a registered Republican... now I am a registered Democrat.

On a separate note, most LEOs I know are conservative, however, most conservatives are 'white-collar' professionals. LE is traditionally 'blue-collar' work. What I don't understand is, why the reversal of views when it comes to LEOs?

occiferdave, actually I believe that most blue collar WORKING folks are pretty conservative. They may be registered as Democrats but when you go issue by issue they tend to be conservative. Most blue collar folks like guns, hate high taxes, support our armed forces, think criminals need to be punished and are opposed to their hard earned money being given to some lazy welfare recipient. Whether they attend regular services or not, they in general also believe in Judeo/Christian morals. They also place more importance on having a job than worrying about some "endangered" spotted owl or kangaroo rat. The belief that conservatives are mostly white collar professionals is a myth. The labor unions are a factor in this as the unions tend to back Democrats regardless of their members wishes.

                      Sex........Yes please.

I've always theorized that conservative civic minded people go into police work; liberal civic minded people go into teaching.

                        Just a thought.

Personally I think that doing anything based on what your political party does is just wrong. I consider myself and independant. I'm probably more democrat than republican, but also more conservative than liberal. If that actually makes any sense.

Well, that theory's full of air, Lict ... I'm a liberal and I'm going into policing.

BillR, do you mean AFDC? What parts of welfare do you disagree with? I think that welfare should never pay more then a minimum wage job, and should certainly be reformed to be a booster step back into the work force. I don't like the idea of children starving because their parents can't work. Not saying that you do, I assume you (like many others, me too) hate lazy oafs who eek out an existance on welfare.

BillR, I also resent the implication that liberals don't support the armed forces. If you go to the extremes of either party, you find nutty liberals who hate the oppressive military, or you find nutty conservatives who think the military is an illegal UN police force. Until recently - and I'm not up to date on that issue, so I might be wrong about "until recently" - (especially under Reagan!) conservatives have NOT been very supportive of labor unions -- imagine a gun owning miner ... he's got a tough vote ahead of him ... pro-gun control Dem, or anti-union Republican? Tough choice.

Yes, I know, we libs are evil for not wanting animals driven to extinction ...

Argh. I swear. I'd like to smack you after reading your post! Liberals can't be religious, or have good morality? I'm not religious, but I'm moral. I don't go around beating the **** out of people, and I help the old woman in apartment J with her groceries!

It's impossible to define good or bad based on someone's political ideology. Ya' gotta look at the PERSON, and ONLY the person. Anyone who thinks otherwise really needs to meet more people.

I'm conservative, and a leapord never changes its spots. I never will see myself as a liberal. However, considering my extreme dislike for this JOKE FOR A PRESIDENT we have, many have mistaken me for a liberal.

I am very proud of the fact that I am NOT a Republicrat, I mean Republican, I am of a 3rd party and always will be.

I will say, I do have some libertarian beliefs, though.
