Even the military has height/weight standards. I was overweight by ONE pound when i completed basic but my BMI was within standards. My entire career i was getting taped and passing PT tests. It was annoying but it never held me back from promotions etc.

There are jobs where the need to be physically fit MUST be a standard. LE, Fire, EMS are the top 3 (in the civilian sector). The reasons should be obvious. We are there to get someone else out of trouble or save ourselves on occasion. We dont get the luxury of calling 911, we ARE 911.

I agree with this article. There should be no reason why a officer does not take care of themselves. Officer need to be better than the people they are fighting.

      What do you guys think?
Unless the department allows PAID time to work out, I totally disagree with it. Our Fire Department allows 2 hours per day to work out during their shift, but Police Department are not afforded this benefit.

2hrs in a 24 hr shift...whoopee. Im willing to bet theyre still available for calls while working out as our fire guys are. Your statement only goes to show that the fire guys KNOW they have to be in shape in order to do their job while you choose to ignore the fact LE should be fit as well. Or are you complaining that nobody will hold your hand on the treadmill while dangling an OT check in front of you?

Did he say he was ignoring it? No. He said it was a PERSONAL choice.

Are you saying you can't be in shape UNLESS someone forces you to do so?

OSP uses body fat, and it's actually pretty lenient. I believe for my age group (being male) it's somewhere around 21%..

Hell, I'm "allowed" 24 hours to work out, but that's in between the 20 runs we take during that time. Ever been at 31 minutes out of 45 on the treadmill and then have to stop? Ever been at 2 out of 3 sets on bench and had to leave immediately? Yeah, that's what working out at the firehouse is like.

I think that its very important to stay in decent shape. We arent given any time to hit the gym, but if you do our job the way its supposed to be done then you should have no problem. I mean i havent touched a gym in a while, but i stay in shape by running down into canyons and runnning back out.

I remember during the academy when we would run our instructor would look at the guys in back and just repeat "thats going to be your back up someday..." I try to make sure that people can count on me to get where they need me, be it one mile or five.

NO. And thats my point. As an officer you shouldnt have to be bribed or threatened to stay in shape. And to whine cuz the fireguys are 'allowed' to work out for 2 hrs on shift, between calls, is sad. If youre working 4/10's you have 14 hrs left in the day to work out. AND, If you choose to do this job it isnt a 'choice' to stay in shape, its a neccessity.

The reason I say it is so important is because if I am fighting for my life. I don't want some FAT SLOB coming to help me, who won't be able to bend over and fight if their life depended on it. I want someone who is in shape and ready to go. I was told a quote in one of my classes that I live my life by..."Your worst day needs to be better than their best...if not...you are dead. You need to shoot straighter, run faster, fight harder, and know more than them, if you don't, your dead ."

You also have 72hrs on your says off to workout!

I work out two hours a day, and I have 3 jobs...so anyone who says they don't have time...you just don't find time. How about before going to bed, pump out some pushups, sit-ups. How about while watching T.V. do push ups and sit ups? I have 2 hrs set aside everyday for working out (switch between lifting, running, stretching workouts) however, while I am watching T.V. during the commercials I do push ups (as many as I can during the commercials) and sit ups (do this during the show sometimes, dependent on how the show is going). It is not that hard to get in shape, you just have to WANT to get in shape.

Oh, good Lord. I believe you have missed the point. An agency should NOT make it a requirement when they don't give you an opportunity to work out while on duty.

If you're working 4 10's, you have 14 hours left to work out? Sleeping any time in there? College? Family? Children? Extra activities?

In addition, so long as I'm doing my job, I don't think it's any of my agencies business what my BMI is or my health. That's my business.

I didn't read where anyone said Officers shouldn't be in shape. What 'shape' would that be? When should a LE agency be able to make decisions better left to the medical profession? When should my 6 foot 3 inch partner that doesn't loose foot chases, jumps in hands on when needed be put through the ringer by an agency who says he shouldn't be X pounds? It's not the agency's business.
