The interim chief of the Mississippi University for Women Police Department is in critical condition after a Saturday motorcycle wreck, according to the Columbus Police Department.

Chief Lamar Peacock was driving a gray 1999 Buell Lightning northbound on Spivey Road when he was cut off by a maroon SUV.

A witness told police Peacock swerved to miss the vehicle and crashed the motorcycle into the curb. The witness also told police the driver of the vehicle — who did not stop — made no contact with Peacock or the motorcycle.

Police have identified the driver of the SUV but are not planning to present criminal charges at this time.

Peacock suffered severe injuries, and had to be airlifted to Baptist Memorial Hospital–Golden Triangle’s intensive care unit. He suffered eight broken ribs a ruptured spleen — which had to be removed — and is currently on a ventilator.

Friends of Peacock said he will be in the ICU for at least another week.
Talk low, talk slow and don't say too much
