This does beg the question tho of who else celebrity wise are LEO's. SEAGAL is a new one. Shaq. Don't know this NUGENT. I also know (not sure if he is current tho) that James WOOD (of Shark and many other movies) was (and is?) a Reserve Officer in LAPD.

What I want to know is when is Texas gonna go a good one and swear in Mr Norris?

James Woods? That's a new one on me and I worked LAPD for 30 years, unless it's a recent development....or, one more time, they kept me in the dark, again!....the bast**ds!

But I do know that James Garner, of Maverick & Rockford, P.I. fame was an LAPD Specialist Reserve, doing a video, or two. Specialist Reserves got no badge and did no uniform duty.

If he completed an academy at all, I'd expect it was the "citizens' academy" where you show up one night a week for an hour or two of orientation training which last a couple of months.
He did complete a full academy, although I don't remember what level. I did see an article saying he completed over 1200 hours of training. He completed Florida's Equivalency as well. Shaq has said many times that when he retires he plans on pursuing a career in law enforcement. While in Miami he worked with one of the detective units working on crimes against children which is something he's big about.

I stand corrected (kinda)! After locating an article (see below) in the LASD Reserve News (Jan/March 2004), it does appear that Shaq completed the "Level 1" training program with them after two years of participation. (I thought the reserve academy was six months?) He did complete all the required training/testing standards and as such wasn't just given a badge as a publicity gimmick. Apparently, he did earn it!

"So, after two and a half years of training with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Officer S. O’Neal finally finished the Level I portion of the Modular Course. He will be entering a formal field training program with the Los Angeles Port Police. He finished the Level I portion of the Modular Format last year after the Lakers were eliminated from the NBA playoffs against the San Antonio Spurs. The Sheriff’s Department and Officer O’Neal take great pride in the fact he was trained by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department."

Dropped that damn S. Thank you for the correction.

I should have said, to be more accurate, that I had read that James WOODS volunteers as a Reserve LAPD, but cannot find any other reputable source to quote other than Wikipedia and other sites along those lines.

I have sent an e-mail to have a friend check the Department roster.

Reserves would be listed, there, along with civilian and sworn employees.

If he just "volunteers" at his local division, there may be no department-wide listing. I'll let you know what I hear back.

Either way I think it's pretty great that he has gone through all the training and earned the title rather than just do it as a publicity stunt. On a side note, how long is the academy for full time "level 1" officers in CA?

Thanks so much, you've made my afternoon and placed my life, limbs, and (to a lesser degree) my pants in jeopardy!
