It almost physically hurts to watch it.

Our reserves are like all people who are retirement age and do things like traffic control during parades and events.

I wouldn't trust our reserves with guns or mace. Although I believe other departments here have reserves who do more.
          .
Or we're younger people looking to get into LE. I don't know about your department, but we do more than just parades and events. They do trust us to carry mace. We patrol whenever we fell like it. I'll be on an Operation NightCAP detail this weekend (obviously not doing the enforcement, but the b*tch work like tow reports, sitting on tows, and giving rides to passengers etc...).

But yes....your reserves don't do a whole heck of a lot. I know some guys who are reserves from your dept. and the whole concept of not being able to patrol seems foreign to me.

And as for the other depts. there are many who have their reserves carry tasers and transport prisoners. We don't get the tasers, but I think that's more of a budget thing, because I heard a Sgt. talking about trying to get a grant for them. Also, no go on the prisoners, but when the county jail is in your city....doesn't constitute much of a time savings by having a reserve do it...plus that would require installing cages in our squads and that would require them to actually put money into the reserve budget

          • I love the cut aways they do where they replay what "Steven just saw" in a different filter and in slow mo right before they decide to stop and talk to some guys. It is as if they are trying to say he has spidey sense or something. Ridiculous.

              It's a little different here.

I was wondering the same thing. So you just have dudes who hang out with the police department? nice.

Again, it's a mix of people who are just looking to serve their community and those who are looking to get into LE. Believe it or not, there are a lot of things in LE that don't require a license, just two eyes, two ears, and a functioning brain. A typical reserve patrol shift for me might go something like this:

Check-In, See if there are any other Reserves on duty with me. Call dispatch, leave HQ and hit the road. The only mandatory thing I have to do is house watches (people on vacation). After those are done, I'll drive through the major parks in the city, either just looking to see what's going on or kindly advising people to leave if the park is closed. I'll do any directed patrols that have been requested by admin due to increases in crimes like break-ins and burglaries. I'll assist at accident scenes. If an officer asks for a roll-by at a traffic stop and I'm in the area, I'll head there until another squad gets there.I'll take calls for things like recovered property and fireworks complaints. I'll assist on tows. I'll secure crime scenes that are waiting for the medical examiner or the crime lab. When I feel like going home, I'll go home.

And then there's the caveat that we can do anything when directed to do so by a licensed peace officer.

The "point", vfm208, is to assist the department so that there are more officers available to do things that require a license. Also, since we have a rather light call load, we are there to provide a presence in some of the less busy areas of the city. I live in the same city where I'm a reserve and I seldom see an officer in my neighborhood unless they're there for a call.

And albatross, there are both dudes and gals
