I once had a young graduate female police officer on my shift, intelligent but lazy, nicknamed 'the olympic torch' because she would not go out on patrol........ anyway she was living in a police hostel attached to a station on an adjoining division and was dating an officer from that station.
This officer sat the annual national exam. for promotion to sergeant, officers on my shift were convinced she would pass due to her background and at the same time terrified that she may soon be telling them what to do.
As the day of the results being posted drew close this officer and boyfriend took a couple of days off and went for a romantic trip into the countryside.
Whilst I was at work one morning I received a call from a fellow sergeant in the station where the boyfriend and she resided stating he had heard that she had passed the sergeants exam... I was very busy at the time but even though I knew the results had not been published I thought that he was winding me up so I said," yes thats correct, she also came second in the country...very high marks"
With that I made my excuses put down the phone and forgot all about it. When this officer returned to her accommodation she was congratulated by officers for her pass and top grading, she told all her friends and family, they had a celebratory meal with her folks and generally there was great rejoicing.
Two days later the officer paraded for duty, I took the parade and had the exam results in sealed envelopes to pass around to those who had taken the exam. I handed them around , this particular officer sat smiling in anticipation, I had forgot all about the previous telephone call, as the officer opened the envelope it stated she had failed........... her face dropped and a tear rolled down her cheek..she was gutted and later tried to blame me..........
Anyway my question is ..has anyone quite innocently used a throwaway line that has caused a chain reaction of events??
