SUN CITY WEST - Public sex in Sun City West has got to come to a stop, the retirement community's recreation officials are saying.
There have been two dozen sightings over the past year of senior citizens engaged in sexual activity at several recreational sites - pools and spas, as well as golf courses and golf carts, park benches and cars in parking lots.
And residents are complaining, according to the people who run Recreation Centers of Sun City West Inc., which manages public facilities in the community of more than 26,000.
"When you talk of sex in Sun City West, people kind of chuckle," said Mauryne Hall, a spokeswoman for the group.
But the issue is entirely serious, she said.
The public sex has mostly occurred late at night or early in the morning and includes heterosexual and homosexual activity, Hall said.
"We don't want to deny anybody their right to healthy sexual expression," she said. "We just want them to do it in a more appropriate place."
The Recreation Centers' governing board is drafting a letter asking the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to help put an end to such public activity.
Hall said the intent is not to have people thrown in jail, but to nudge them to be more discreet.Dick Cherry, the commander of the Sun City West Sheriff's Posse, said volunteer posse members, when patrolling parking lots, have spotted people engaged in "intimate behavior."
He said his group will help patrol for lewd behavior if the Sheriff's Office asks.
