  • Off Duty LAPD Officer Shots Motorist In Road Rage Incident

CORONA--A case of ‘road rage’ is at the center of an officer-involved shooting that left a motorist dead.

Investigators have made no arrests in the wake of the incident.

The off-duty LAPD officer, Antonio Mendez, claims the other motorist sideswiped his Hummer and then sped off down Interstate 15 with the officer in pursuit.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Herlinda Valenzuela explained what happened when both men drove into a parking lot on Temescal Canyon Road.

“Both drivers exited their vehicles and a verbal confrontation ensued. The off-duty officer attempted to detain the hit-and-run suspect and there was an officer-involved shooting.”

The 50-year-old man was hit once and died minutes later at a Corona hospital.

There was no indication he was armed.

A child in the officer’s Hummer was not injured. Mendez, who's been with the LAPD for two years, has been placed on leave.

I am not judging the shooting, but I question why the officer opted to chase the guy at 100+ with his one year old in the car?

Witnesses interviewed on the news tended to support that the other driver was physically aggressive just prior to the shooting. The deceased was unarmed.

Question: did the officer really need to speed after this guy? Wouldn't it have been sufficient to get the plate number to be used for later investigation?

Don't know about the shooting. When they use passive constructions [The off-duty officer attempted to detain the hit-and-run suspect and there was an officer-involved shooting.” ] they are avoiding saying who was responsible. Definitely weasel words.

I guess he didn't hear about the DHS agent shot and killed at the post office in Florida.

      This screams poor judgement.

A Hummer? That two year rookie must be doin pretty good. If the guy done a hit and run on him, why is it a case of 'road rage'.

Didn't I just read something about the dead guy trying to abduct the officer's one year old child?

            Found it:

CORONA, Calif.—An off-duty Los Angeles police officer has killed a man who allegedly tried to snatch the officer's toddler out of his vehicle in Corona.

The Los Angeles Times reports the officer and an unidentified driver got into a minor traffic accident Monday.

As the two exchanged information, a male passenger from the other vehicle allegedly tried to grab the officer's 1-year-old child from his car. The officer shot the man. No names have been released.

Julianne Sohn, a Los Angeles police spokeswoman, says the case is under investigation.

No other information has been released.

There r a few conflicting stories right now. As far as a 2 year LAPD officer with a hummer it is quite common for us to live beyond our means! Go to a station parking lot and there are many more expensive cars than an H2 with rims.

The sad part? I bet that Hummer never saw dirt (as it was intended)....

Prayers to the officer and his family....

I can not speak for "we", but I can speak for me.

It is a property crime (the accident), get a plate and make a claim. Now someone is dead because it got out of control.

Poor judgement on the hit & run driver by not playing by the rules.

Now who would "they" be ruby?? If by "they" you mean some crappy little blog put out by a third rate Inland Empire News Radio service, then you are correct by referring to the story as weasel words.

Yeah umm but ahh you are not making much sense. You dont have all the facts yet you claim poor judgement. Based on what? There may be evidence that the officers child may have been in the process of being abducted by a passenger in the hit and run vehicle. Clearly too early to comment that is why I posted poor judgement based on what?

Now you say poor judgement on the hit and run driver. Yes but your original post appeared to be accusing the officer of poor judgement. But, then again maybe the officer was TRYING to get the tag as he pursued the other driver. Maybe there was no pursuit. You cant receive compensation from another insurance company or court appointed restitution if you have no plate. Then actually positively identifying the operator is another story.

Waaaaaay toooooo early to cast the officer in a negative light.

i am not saying anyone deserves to die but if this is the case and that guy tried to snatch the officers kid, he got what was coming to him. if someone tired to take my kid i would have shot him too.
