Not only has a wife and children lost their father, Queensland Police have recently lost one of their own in a recent fatal shooting. Our union commenced fund raising for the widow and children and if this is the type of support we can expect our respective governments give to the families of those Police who have fallen in the line of duty, we all should give the game away. Then again, we do get the governments we deserve. The article below has been copied from http://www.couriermail.com.au, an on-line news service
"THE State Government's consumer watchdog has tried to shut down a fundraising appeal set up in memory of the Queensland police officer who was killed on the job this week.
The Office of Fair Trading contacted the Queensland Police Union yesterday morning after reading about its appeal for donations to assist the young family of Detective Senior Constable Damian Leeding.
He contacted Premier Anna Bligh's office, and just under three hours later, the fund was declared legitimate.
"I am thankful for the Premier's speedy intervention that ensured the deputy Director-General of the Office of Fair Trading called me to hastily resolve all the issues," Mr Leavers said.
Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Paul Lucas, who oversees the OFT, indicated he was not happy with the over-zealous conduct of the acting team leader of registration services.
"Rather than contacting the Police Union quoting the law to them, the Office of Fair Trading should have offered assistance as to how they could help with the very commendable decision to set up a charitable trust to the memory of Detective Senior Constable Leeding and to support his family," Mr Lucas said.
"I'm sure the Police Union's time is currently and very appropriately occupied in support of Mr Leeding's family rather than answering insensitive emails."
Mr Leavers said more than $40,000 had already been donated at Westpac Bank and Police Credit Union branches, all of which will go to Sonya Leeding, son Hudson, 2, and baby Grace.
Donations can be made at Queensland Credit Union or Westpac branches. Damian Leeding Remembrance Fund BSB: 704 052. Acc No: 1041646.
The 35-year-old father of two died in hospital on Wednesday when his life support was switched off, three days after he was shot in the face while responding to an armed robbery at Pacific Pines on the Gold Coast.
A junior officer from the OFT told the union "how dare they set up a fund without permission" and it would take 14 days to register such an appeal.
QPU general president Ian Leavers said he was "taken aback by the overly officious nature of the junior staffer questioning the legitimacy of the only official fund for Damian Leeding's widowed wife and family".
