  • How to handle this (not letting someone pass)?

I think I already know the answer to this scenario but would like something more "solid". I often drive in the mountains and the best example of the location would be the Walker River Canyon area on US395 for anyone that knows, but that isn't the only place obviously. For people that may not know what it the road is like, it is one lane each way with two passing zones for each direction with an additional lane after the curvier parts (map).

My car is a Subaru Impreza WRX STI, and as I am sure a few of you know it does pretty well when it comes to roads like this. So my problem and question is what should I do when I come up behind a person that is going really slow (10mph below speed limit or even slower) in the curves but then floors it when I begin to try and pass them in the passing zone only to start going slow again in the curves? I will admit a few years ago when I was more aggressive I would just floor it and try to stay ahead, but now I have calmed down and abort the pass when I hit 5-8mph or so over. Though with the new attitude it still does get frustrating because I then feel like I am heading for a "following to closely" ticket even when I am trying to give the other driver space.

I can't call them in since it is a dead area for most cell phones. The other thing I am wondering is if I would be risking a ticket if I slowed way down to try and give more space and then speed up to the limit again after I see some traffic in my mirrors? I try not to do it in spots where someone may come around a blind curve. The reason I try not to stop completely is often times I had already passed some other cars or even semis before hand and don't want to get stuck in the same situation again.

Also, just to satisfy my curiosity, would it be considered racing if someone did try and floor it past another vehicle like that or reckless driving etc?

Sorry for the long post, but I want to make sure I explained everything properly, thanks for your time

Two lane, winding roadways are problems in all states. Most have laws that require the passed vehicle to move as far to the right as possible and NOT speed up; however, there are those who take a personal affront that anyone else wants to get around them.

The best way to approach the situation is to drive behind them until a safe and successful pass can be executed. If they become aggressive and refuse to allow you to pass just keep following at a safe distance and try to refrain from foolish actions.
Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence!

Thanks for the quick reply, that's what I try to do now so it is nice to see that I am handling it like I should.

Stay back from the slow driver. Since you know the roads plan your "attack". Slowly speed up before reaching the passing zone then let your little turbo work as you rapidly accelerate pass them. Pretend you have a slow car and need to build up speed.

If you've been riding their *** with your attention grabbing car and they too know the roads then them might speed up to divert your passing ability.

If the car is dangerous write down the tag and other information. Call the state patrol or agency that works that road and tell them that you have frequently encountered road rage drivers. But that will get extra patrols and your car will get some attention as well.

Rear end them going atleast 10-15 over the speed limit, get up under them, get em loose and put em in the trees.....

All seriousness, great advice posted above.

              X2 on Ryker's comments.

I have to drive a mountain canyon to and from work every day, and get stuck behind ALL SORTS of goofy vehicles. I'm running a turbo Jetta and I just accept that I'll have to stick behind them until I hit a stretch where I know I can get around. And then I plan ahead and don't give them a chance to speed up. By the time they see me passing, I'm at passing speed. Surgical strike beats a contested pass any day.

On that kind of road, the other options......aren't worth the risk.
That canyon is in my patrol district and I can't count the number of times I've rolled on a crash, get on scene and look at what happened and think to myself....there was no version where that was a good idea for the driver to try.

You cannot speed to pass someone. If he speeds up to the limit in the passing zone than you cannot pass. I had a guy do this to me the other day. He sped up to 10 over when on the straight away so I couldn't pass him...he got cited for 10 over. Did I mention the low profile light bar on my truck makes things like this so much fun.

You are required to follow at a safe distance and then pass only when it is safe to do so.

By the way, I would like to thank many owners of WRX's for increasing my weekly ticket count. I would guess that I write a speeding ticket to a WRX on the interstate two to three times per week. I can see that hood scoop at 1200' with no problem at all.

I'm not saying that you speed but they are fast little cars and they get many drivers in trouble.
I have the heart of a child..................................No really, it is in a jar on my desk.

I don't doubt that one bit, I admit the first half year or so it was hard not to push it a bit, but luckily I have worked on it and don't feel the "need for speed" that much anymore, although I do enjoy the mountain roads a bit more now that I know speed isn't everything

Thanks again for all the advice guys/girls

                      Maybe try a pit maneuver.J/K

The STI is a great car. I'm on the fence on buying one or an EVO.
