  • Window Tint?

Hey everyone, Im guessing this has been a topic on here before, but does anyone have any definitive explanation of what can be considered legal and what cannot? I have heard so many explanations that I dont know what to think. haha. Btw, I live in Pennsylvania, if that helps.

    Thanks guys. Clark.

Out here window tint laws specify the percentage of light allowed through--- I.E. 60%, 80%, whatever. These are measured with a specific hand-held tool some officers carry with them. You need to check your MVD code to see if anything ther than "factory tint" is legal. I think most places back East prohibit anything else.

      PA statute:

TITLE 75 Section 4524 (e)(1) of the Pennsylvania Common Statutes states that

      (1) No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sun screening device or other material which does not permit a person to see or view the inside of the vehicle through the windshield, side wing or side window of the vehicle.
Here is additional information that specifically addresses the PA laws:

It seems that PA hasn't actually set a percentage of how dark the tint can be. Every state is different but PA seems to be very liberal and leaves it up to officer discretion and a court decision.

I can say this, its legal to have tint on all windows, and apparently the windshield. Use common sense with this, if you go darker than 25% it starts looking like the windows are completely blacked out and will catch the attention of the po-lice. Also call the state police and ask if there is a percent limit and then ask for statue number for reference.
