  • Failed out...need advice

I made it all the way to the poly no problem, I passed the poly also, but my dept. did not like one of my answers. This is gross I know, but when I was 12 I let my dog lick PB of my genitals 4-5 times. I don't really know why I did it, I'm not going to justify my actions, but I guess I was just 12 years old and it was a really stupid mistake. My BI officer said if it was once they could roll with it, but bec. it was repeated times it is looked upon as deviant behavior. He said he could try to get it to go through the Chief, but bec. he is new and bec. the dept. has been in the news about some other issues recently, he really didn't think it was going to fly. He sugg. I voluntarly withdraw from the process and the reason why I did withdraw so will be sealed along with the dept. so it wont follow me when I try to re-apply again else where. He also told me to go to the police shrink and tell him about it, and try to get a clean bill of health from him and if I get that I should have no problems with it in the future.
I mean again I know it's wrong, gross etc. but I didn't think it would be something that would roadblock me from getting a job in law enforcement, I figured they would look upon it as something that occured when I was a kid and that would be it.
I'm obv. going to go see the shrink about this and hopefully get it cleared, but what are my chances of this killing me at other depts.?
    Thanks

I know it's weird/odd etc., but could somebody on here give some advice?.
I mean is this really going to kill my chances of getting on with any dept?.
I got hardly any sleep bec. of this last night, I just feel really guilty and I'm worried sick that this may kill my chances.

First off, I think that's just gross and would never let my dog do that. Second, whatever you've told them in this process other departments have the ability to look at when you apply with them. Third, as gross as that is, apply elsewhere and be honest, admit to your mistakes and go with whatever they give you. If I was asked to drop out of the process, I'd say "not until I'm dqed officially."

Just never give up and hopefully you'll get on eventually. As depressing as it might be, I know what the feeling of not getting in is like. Just hang on and all will work out.

Totally agree it was gross, the only thing I have to back it up was I was 12 years old and I guess did not fully know what I was doing. My BI officer told me that the reason was sealed within the dept. and it would not be released to other depts. I apply at, thats seriously what he said. I don't think he would lie to me.
Is this seriously going to be a big stumbling block in me getting into law enforcement?.
        Thanks

The problem is still likely to come up in other applications, and it will raise some potential red flags.

Right, I was told that. Hense going to the shrink to get it cleared so I have something to show when it does come up.
Do you think this will be a huge issue in me getting on anywhere?

Why would it matter if it was sealed or not? If you're going to be honest and disclose it whenever you apply, they're going to know about it. Also, the questions "Are you a member of any online forums? If so what are they and what is your screen name?" may come up, to which, if you answer honestly, will point them right here. If you do go to a psychologist, which you said you are, they WILL for a fact ask if you have ever sought psychiatric counseling, what for, and how long ago. And again, if you answer honestly, will point them directly to the reason why. If you just turned 21, you have plenty of time to seek counseling and deal with it, it may just take a while.
Right I understand, hmmm I guess I feel like I may have been lied to a bit, idk. I deff. see what your saying, I prob. should have just taken my chances and saw what the Chief had to say. My BI officer told me I do have a few other things in my background, but nothing that cant be easily explained/reasoned away. Again I think what I did was gross, but I guess I see it as a shame that something I did at 12 could really hurt my chances.
I just feel horrible that a mistake I made at 12 may kill me, I don't know why I did it, I was a dumb kid. God I wish I hadn't have done this...

Everything has the chance to hurt your chances if you aren't upfront and honest about it, not just with the previous department, but the ones you plan to apply for. Know what I had to explain to several departments? I'm 20 now, at 16 I was a ride operator for a roller coaster theme park and flipped off the camera on the ride in uniform, got suspended, then terminated. I was embarassed as hell to have to tell them it. A few times they commented "well that was stupid." But it didn't matter, the criticism you're going to take from a B.I. will be a lot less than someone years down the road that wants your badge. Just tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, so help you god.

Oh I know, I was upfront and honest about it. I answered truthfully when it came up on the poly...

i think 12 is a bit old for this type of "experimentation". then again, i am not a psychiatrist/psychologist. i dont think its going to automatically Dq you. i have definately heard much worse.

I dont think it will. As long as your honest you should be fine. What Im curious to know is how did this even come up? I know on polys they ask you certain questions, but how the hell.. nevermind. I wouldnt VOLUNTEER the info, but if asked, by all means tell the truth. You were a juvenile. Juveniles do stupid things. Integrity is your most important asset.

^Come on man be serious. I did it. It was stupid, dumb and gross. I just hope to God this doesn't kill my chances of getting on at other depts. The rest of my background is pretty clean and good, so I hope I'll be ok.
