I had my Captains interview today but I guess I did not do so well! The BI told me that I did not get selected and that they would place me in the six month waiting period but if another slot open up during the process before the October academy, that they would bring me back again. Is this really true or is she just making me feel good and "BS' me? What are my chances after that? Have you or anyone heard of them getting called back in and still getting hire? Thanks....

No, I don't think the Officer is BS ing you. Success in interviews is probably more of an art than a science. You're not the first applicant to not do all that well in an interview. Without analyzing yourself to death, do a little mental "after action" on your interview, and look at some area(s) where you might have done a little better. Above all, don't give up. Keep trying.

If 10 people apply for one position, nine of them are not going to get hired. There is no failure in that. It's just mathematics.

Based on what you described, it sounds like several people were reachable on the hiring list. They interviewed them and picked one for the lone position. It also sounds like if another vacancy comes up before the next academy, they will go back to whoever remains on the hiring list, interview again and select one from those who are reachable. That is part of the normal hiring process.
