Vieweing legal "adult" material wouldn't, by itself, DQ you. I would think, however, that "compulsive" veiwing would be looked upon as a moral issue.

Unless you are just reading the articles, of course.

P.S. I'm not too far from you.

I havent been through a PD hiring process but i would be suprised if they ask you about your current porno viewing habits. I could see them asking about kiddie porn but thats about it

I remember years ago there was a question on a polygraph asking if you were ever involved in any deviant sexual activity. During the pre poly interview, the examiner said he wasn't sure what that meant exactly, but was more concerned with your personal opinion. If you think porn viewing is bad, you will probably get asked to explain the behavior.

Viewing legal pornography at a legal age is not against the law. I have had the same situation as jerrymaccauley. They never asked if I have ever looked at porn for 8 hours straight, etc . They do ask questions like the one he mentioned (any deviant sexual activity). That really makes the question into asking if you think you have done anything morally wrong.

Durning the our state patrol hiring process I went through, there was a question on the application and you were asked that question as well durning the poly test if you ever committed bestiality.

Also I was asked during the interview before the poly when my first sexual experience was. I almost wanted to answer why does that matter however I did answer his quesiton.

Wow. I've never heard either of those questions asked during a poly. I've heard something similar to the beastiality one during a psych exam, but never the virginity one.

That one also asked me if I had every been a Commie....and if I had ever been with any groups wanting to overthrow the GOV.....

We of course can laugh at questions regarding pornography, however, it can be a serious issue if there is an addiction to pornography, and if it is close to CHILD PORN. That is a valid concern. Questions regarding working with foreign agents or overthrow of the government is also important. Do you want to have the KKK or another member of such a group as a LEO, I don't. There are persons wanting in LE that are into those activities. Valid questions may seem strange to person that have not looked at the results obtained when asking these questions. We do get individuals that are un-convicted sex offenders applying for LEO jobs.

I hope this isn't too far off topic, but I think that a lot of places still look at credit reports, too. I am sure that a lot of applicants wonder what that has to do with being a good cop, but I am sure that if all other things being equal an agency would rather hire someone with a good credit rating than a poor one.

Now I don't know if most backgrounders nowadays look into this, but time once was when moral turpitude, at least I think that is the term, was looked at pretty closely. While the local prosecutor might not be charging cases for fornication or adultery, it really doesn't look to great to have a copper that has a habit of dating women who are cheating on their husband.

Even factors like child support issues can have a huge effect on hiring. It is one thing to be paying your former wife for your child that she has physical custody of, but it is quite another thing to have children by several women, to never have been married to any of them, and have a poor track records of child support payments.

Things like civil litigation can have a big impact, too. If you have been served a number of summons and complaints because you don't pay your mortgage or automobile loan promptly it really doesn't look very good.

I think most agencies are inclined to look at a number of factors, but the bottom line is they are going to want the best applicants. If there are factors that don't look favorable they are going to look closer at other applicants.
