  • shift differential pay

I have seen that some departments have what they call shift differential pay. Could someone explain what this means and how it works?

Shift differential is, basically, when an officer gets additional pay for working a specific shift. Shfit differential pay frequently applies to midnight shift...for working a "less-desirable" shift, the officers get additional pay per-hour between, say, 11pm and 7am.

I forget exactly what my depts. wording is on shift differential but basically, like Bing oh said, if you work 2nd or 3rd shift, you make shift pay. My depts. is $.85 an hour soon to go up. It's a little added bonus for missing the kids soccer games and dinners with the fam.
