  • Is your Background Unit all sworn or retired officers?

I retired from a background unit that did away with all but about 8 sworn officers. In fact, the entire admin are all civilians as well. Are your agencies all sworn or have they gone to civilian BI's?

I worked at the same agency as a sworn investigator and then as a retired civilian one. I saw pros and cons to both.

I believe the county police (approximately 1200 sworn) is all civilian, primarily or perhaps exclusively former LEO. My former agency (64 sworn) has detectives handle BI's.

As a smaller agency, our Investigations division (all sworn) does all the background checks. The information is then turned over to the Police Commission, a civilian body appointed by the Mayor, who has the ultimate say over who is hired or not.
