  • PHS Porn Questions

Well here's another "Can I be a cop?" question. Let me preface this with I know every agency is different and I'm not looking for anything except your personal opinions on the issue.

I was looking through the PHS while preparing to fill it out and noticed the two questions:

    1. Have you ever viewed pornographic material in the workplace?

    2. Have you ever engaged in sexual activity in the workplace in violation of your employers guidelines?

I'm sure you all see where this is going... there were two occasions that make me worry.

    - I was working custodial and there is quite a bit of downtime late at night. One night I was perusing Reddit and would you believe it? There were some suggestive pictures. Long story short I excused myself to a private bathroom.

    - My girlfriend came to visit me at work while I had some downtime and we ended up in a private room making out and such. We stopped before things went to far because it didn't feel right.

Looking back both of these occasions are embarrassing and something that I regret, but they both happened and will obviously need to be disclosed if I apply.

Anyways... the application process requires a fair amount of effort and I don't want to contact previous employers and line up references if this is going to be an automatic disqualification.

I figured I would see what you all thought. Is this something that is going to end a career path before it got started? Or is it something I will have to explain but could possibly be worked through?

    Thanks in advance.

You'd be far from the first applicant to engage in some side action at work. Guarantee you a number of your fellow future coworkers, if hired, have had ride alongs with happy endings if you catch my drift. Agencies usually have lax enforcement on it in my experience but that isn't a universal rule. What's good for an established officer may not also be good for an applicant.

For the first question, did you view the Reddit material on a cellphone or personal device or was it on a work computer? Were the pictures suggestive or outright pornographic? I would take the question to mean 'were you watching pornhub on a work computer?'. End of the night, whatever you answer now, expect it to come up during your polygraph. In terms of masturbation while at work, it didn't ask you about that.

For the second question, was making out with your girlfriend a violation of company policy? If so, easy enough. Your girlfriend came to visit you once, you made out, but didn't engage in intercourse. Mea culpa, you were both consenting adults. I'm not saying it was the best decision but it's not an auto DQ unless you're applying for campus police at a religious school.

How long ago were the incidents? Your background investigation will differentiate between something you did at 16 at a summer job versus something you did last week. I'm not asking you to justify yourself to the internet but put the questions into context and perspective; they're looking for sex offenders/sexual deviants.

    For example...

    1) Did you ever view pornographic material in a workplace? "On one occasion I viewed risque photographs on my phone/on a non-pornographic website while at work."

    2) Have you ever engaged in sexual activity in the workplace in violation of your employers guidelines? "My girlfriend visited me once at work and we made out but I felt awkward about it and we stopped."

Neither would set you up as an auto DQ in my experience. I would say apply and let them make their own determination. Don't hide it but let them ask for details. If basic answers are good enough, they're good enough. If not, they'll clarify.

Yeahhh...I feel like flogging the dolphin in the workplace is generally frowned upon.

Disclose THE TRUTH on your background paperwork and in any background interview THEN you will find out if the agency thinks it is ok

It doesn't matter if your brother's first cousin twice removed is a cop........................If you are not, you should NOT be answering in the Ask a COP area of the forum
Since some people need to be told by notes in crayon .......Don't PM me with without prior permission. If you can't discuss the situation in the open forum ----it must not be that important

Tell the truth and don’t make any excuses about your actions. Don’t try to downplay.

Unless there is more to the story, I don’t see this as an auto DQ. Apply.

I'm waiting for the PHS to include a question asking whether an applicant has ever posed naked for a magazine or publication. One day an issue of Playboy came out containing an article labeled "Women of Steel" withing which was a topless picture of one of our officers. It said she was a shoplifting agent with a department store. When questioned about the photo, she explained that it was taken before she was hired, when she was working in loss prevention for a department store. When asked why she didn't report this during the background, she pointed out there was nothing in the PHS that asked if she ever posed naked for Playboy, so she felt no need to disclose.

Nine months later she abruptly resigned. Two weeks after that, the next addition of Playboy came out and she was Playmate of the month, complete with her agency uniform.

Going too far is half the pleasure of not getting anywhere

1/ yes, it was a child porn case and if I could open my skull and scrub my brain to get rid of the image I would.
                2. No, but I know more than I can count on both hands that have been fired for it.

Stay where you are. Be happy w/ the job you have. You used a county/city whatever computer to view porn. Your gf shows up and you can't control yourself enough to the point you have to have sex/make out at your job site.

I don't see 'career ender' in bright neon lights here. It's a bit embarrassing to admit about the time you rubbed one out in the work john, but I've seen worse get by.

Let's face it. If perfect, flawless personal histories were the standard, the percentage of non-qualified applicants would be 100%.

These things are situational and there's a difference between it happened once, when you were 19 working a midnight shift janitor gig- or it happens three times a week and you are 39 working at a YMCA.

Go to confession, say ten Hail Mary's and five Our Fathers, and leave yourself alone when on the clock.

Disclose it and let the totality of circumstances dictate what happens.

So you rubbed one out at work but stopped before banging your girlfriend because it "didn't feel right" WTF.
