Undetected theft question

I am 21 planning on applying to agencies within the next year when i finish my Bachelors degree. When i was 19 i was working at a grocery store and there was a Wal-Mart bike in the storage room. It didnt move for almost 6 months, so when i left the job i took the bike. I heard it mentioned through other employees that i was my managers bike. I didnt return it because i hated the manager and i thought this was a way of "sticking" it to him. A dumb decision i know. A few months after i left the job i got a phone call from the manager demanding his bike back. I denied any knowledge of the bike being taken. Will this incident DQ me for a LE job? I have learned from this mistake and taken proper actions to ensure that i dont make a similar decision ever again. I plan on being completly honest with my BI when the time arises. Any advice would be helpful.

Not only will the theft hurt you, so will the lying. Being a Police Officer you need intergity, its your backbone for appearing in court.

I would maybe try and get afew more years behind you, try the military also.

Ok, have you called back the manager and tell him you stole the bike? Did you recompense him for it? It is one thing to learn from the mistake, and another to right it.

If I was a hiring person and you told me you stole the bike AND lied about it, BUT you felt guilty about it and told the manager you stole it, payed him back, and accepted any other consequences I would be WAY more inclined to let it pass.

Are you gonna be tryin to steal bikes from impound??? LOL, im just playin! Hopefully everything will work out for ya. We all made mistakes in our past, and every agency views each of them differently. Good luck!

Make it right....

I think LCPLPunk is right... You need to call the guy and compensate him for it. This will show that you actually do think it was wrong and you are willing to make it right. Good Luck.

yes i almost guarantee you will be DQed since it only happened 2 years ago. theft from workplace? very serious... theft because you hated your manager? very serious also... what do you think the manager is going to say when a BI contacts him/her? heck if you were in CA and the bike was worth more than $400 it could be a felony grand theft. i don't know the theft laws in NV.

I agree with the above posts; swallow your pride, return the bike (or pay for it) and apologize. You can't change the past, but you can try. You may still need some more time to go by.

Great post!! Ask80 i agree 100%. Okay you had a great error in judgement, BUT give it a few years, show that you have grown up and make what you did right by returning the bike or paying for it. I think if you do those things, you will have a chance, but not anytime really soon. I would give it at least 2 years and then try to apply. Sorry bro.
