  • Internet Background check

In the past (only a few years ago) I belonged to some very questionable
on-line groups. During the hiring background check will they look into my Internet on-line history? Can they?
My on-line groups were not illegal, that I know of, but were morally wrong.
    Thanx

Stay away from the circus midget/barnyard animal porn sites for awhile and you should be fine!! Kidding. I've never heard of a department looking at you on line activity unless the sites you were on were radical/subversive groups that advocated the overthrow of the US government and you were a registered member.
The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

The only way they can check is if you registered for any of the sites with your name and address. Also, if you used a credit card to pay for any sites, that would be trackable. If you're just browsing the internet anonymously, I guess they could THEORETICALLY trace it, but it'd be unfeasable to do so.

They can trace your credit card, but it honestly is how far they feel like digging. Most questionable sites have another site that will take and maintain the information you provided. The only way agencies would find out exactly what you joined would be getting the info from the site that kept it, and those sites don't give that info away unless ordered to do so by the courts. And yes, before you asked, I have joined a few of those questionable sites in the past . Basically they can find out anything they want (for the most part) if there willing to take the time and manpower it takes to get it all.
