  • Oral Board Advice

I will be taking an oral board soon and I anticipate the question, "why do you want to work for our police Department". The Dept. I am applying to is not a city if lived or one I'm very familiar with. I was wondering if anyone could suggest how to handle this question. I only know about the city from their website and wonder if I refer to what I liked reading about it if that is a sufficient response. Any suggestios or opinions welcome. Thanks.

Research the city. Go to the city's web site, pull up some crime rates, ect.

I agree with pkagel, get as much info on the city as you can and shoot off stats to them in your answers, do the homework before you go into your interview

be ready to define: community policing, sexual harassment, racial profiling
        be ready to answer:
how to you feel about women in LE?
What assest will you bring to this department?

        be ready to explain:
Your resume in order, hobbies etc..along with it

As in the other responses, do research.. Look at the websites, find out what special programs the dept. has to offer, i.e. dare,k9,great,narco unit, etc.. find out as much insight as you can..

          Good Luck..

Also another good source of info is Chamber of Commerce they can pretty much give you ANYKIND of info on the city. Its up to you how you use the information to your advantage or disadventage.

If you use the info sporadically throughout to make points about the city it works best. You can mention the number of beats, the population and number of officers. Know the Mayor, Chief and Deputy Chief's names. Know what different specialties they have. If you start talking about K9's and they don't have any then you're going to look silly.
