  • How much does Credit play a role in hiring?

I admit it..I dont have that good of credit. Mostly in my young adult stage I didnt really care about my credit. Now as a professional I do care but its so difficult to fix your credit. About 80% of whats on there is paid off, and the rest is in the works.

So, I was wondering this..In this last application for a Reserve Position I included a letter, which i asked for leniency from basing my credit against my character. Stating that yes I was not that stable as a young adult(21-23?) but now as a professional adult, single father of 2 I have grown alot and am working hard to get it worked out.

So would asking for mercy here be a good idea?

I can post the exact letter if you want, if that helps form an opinion and information.

    Have a great day

It carries some weight as it shows how responsible you are. Will it dq you ? that depends on other factors in your background and education. A lot of long term officers have lousy credit and some agencies have taken to pulling annual reports.

How about current collections? I just got divorced in January, and have collections (about $4,000 worth) due to some bills my ex-wife ran up after she lost her job that I couldn't cover, & couple of medical bills (her & the [currently] 3.5 year old kid, I have no medical issues). Since I just pulled my credit report, I'm about to contact the collection agencies & try to devise a payment plan, but it's tough with the child support & other finances I deal with on a month-to-month basis.

Since I just applied with a department not long ago (testing hasn't begun quite yet), will I be screwed if they pull my report & I haven't started any payment plans, or screwed even if I have? Other than those collections, I have other positives (student loan, car note I've never been late on, 1 or 2 others, but no credit cards) aside from the bankruptcy I filed in Jan., 2003 (for the same ex-wife reason).

Hey...credit cards get wiped off your credit after a certain number of years (7 in my state) so get the secured property paid off

I want to take this time to ask for leniency when basing my character against my credit report. I know that some agencies look highly on credit history to show the applicants responsibility and character. This cannot be further from the truth when it comes to me and my credit history. As of today I have 80% of everything that

At least this part of your post could have almost been written by myself. I feel your pain guys.

Journey, I'm probably not best to answer your question, but I don't see how the letter could hurt.

Harley, ...lol I don't know what to say.
