  • Question about my past employer

    Hello all,

I currently was in the process for an agency near me, I went through all of the processes up to the background. It had been around 3 months prior to hearing from by background officer. The last time we had spoke was during my home interview where we went over my application thoroughly. Today I found out that I was not selected for the position and I can reapply in one year.

My question for anyone on here that could possibly answer is, I was fired from a police department I worked at in 2011. I had worked at the department for 4 years when I was fired. My first 3 years at the department I worked part-time at the front desk. I was promoted my last year there and became full-time in the jail.

I was never a sworn officer at this department, just a civilian employee in the jail. They had a 90 day new-employee period that I fell back into when I switched positions in the department. During my 90 day period one night at the jail a Lieutenant asked me to look up a policy and call him back prior to me leaving that night.

I wont make excuses as to why I forgot to call the Lieutenant back but I went home that evening and forgot to call him back. The next day I came in I was advised that I was found to be insubordinate to an official command and was terminated due to still being in my 90 day period.

I have a feeling this is why I did not get on with the department I just applied for. Is this something that will permanently prevent me from ever becoming a police officer? I was very honest on both my application and during the interviews when asked if I had ever been fired. Thank you so much for anyone who reads this and might be able to weight in.

You were there 4 years and after you were promoted you forgot to call the LT back about a policy and then fired the next day?

You keep sticking to that story and you probably won't get too far. There's more to it than what you're saying.

ANY termination from employment is not going to look good. Based on what you've posted, I don't see your termination as a lifetime impediment to your being employed.

Regarding your most recent application, there could be as many reasons you weren't picked up as there are stars in the sky.

Your being invited to re-apply in a year's time indicates to me that you were simply non-selected as opposed to being DQ'd, and there is a world of difference.

In future applications, continue to be honest concerning your work history, test well, and keep at it. Good luck.

Being terminated for cause by a LEO agency (even from a non sworn position) won't look good to any other agency. Being terminated for insubordination will probably keep you from being hired any time soon.

You might find an agency that will give you a try, but the fact of the matter is when you got promoted into a more responsible position, you "failed".

I wouldn't discourage you from trying-----------------but I really think you will be disappointed a lot. -----Sorry

I can understand that happening that way

Today my background investigator got with me. I asked if he could give me any advice on things to work on for the next process? He was very straight forward and told me that they did look at the issue over the phone call but did not find that to go against me and he still recommended me for hire. At the end of the day he thinks i was beat out by lack of experience. I guess I'll just keep on applying places and hopefully i can get experience along the way.
