The problem is that many poeple come to this forum thinking that the Officers who respond here are under the same requirement to remain utterly professional as when on-duty.

That is simply not the case.

When people ask questions in this forum, we (Officers) usually respond as we would to each other: blunt, utterly blunt, and sometimes painfully blunt.

People also do not realize the extreme amount of idiotic questions that come up on this forum, and the disgusting behavior displayed by many of the questioners.

Simply put, we are a blunt, sarcastic, "in your face", and extremely skeptical lot. Do this job for a year and you will never again take things at face value. We rely on facts not rose-colored stories, so it is not at all surprising that some have expressed outright suspicion.

We are not here as official representatives of our respective Agencies, just unofficial representatives of the LE community. None of us is under any burden to sugar-coat, "be cordial", or maintain the level of professionalism required when in uniform. We are people too and entitled to our opinions just as much as the countless individuals who routinely compare us to Nazis. Being a cop does not somehow strip us of the same rights other citizens enjoy when we are off-duty and not officially representing our Agency. And no, stating how things are in our Agency doesn't come anywhere near official representation.

Anyone who believes that we are under some obligation to filter our responses as if we were on-duty is sadly mistaken.

As the old saying goes, if you don't like what you're hearing stop listening.

Here's a thought for you Mr O.P. I mentioned it in a previous reply, but for your benefit I'll mention it again. Do what you're currently doing with dedication and professionalism. Enjoy your work, and take satisfaction in any good that it does. Do that for the sake of the work itself, and with the realization that it's about as close to law enforcement as you'll ever get. Now to the manner in which we reply to you. You Sir, have ZERO control over that. You do not dictate the replies you receive, nor do you dictate the manner in which we reply to you. You also do not set the parameters or the grounds under which we answer your questions. It's been correctly noted, but I'll restate it for your benefit, you will receive, you have received honest, straight from the shoulder replies. We will be bluntly, even brutally honest in our replies to you. Finally, and in direct reply to what you claim was your question, you cannot do anything to improve your chances of becoming an LE Officer. You pretty well torpedoed your chances when you elected to do drugs. You chose to do them, not just once, but multiple times. You own that.
Consider yourself indeed fortunate that you've landed a job as close to LE as you have. Wrap your arms around that. Deal with it. Quit crying, quit making excuses, and rationalizing your poor choices. They're yours, not ours.

What is BTM? I was in the Army some years ago, I know terms have changed. Is this an Air Force term? If you're not even 30 yet, you still have time. The economy is bad so your competition is very tough. In a few years, the economy may improve and you may have a shot. If your current job has a decent pension and you're able to be near your child, I'd consider myself lucky in these times.

Yes they know about it all. Yes the background investigator knew about it all. You know Iowa.....nobody is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. I think I have done quite a bit to right my wrongs all on or before on 21st birthday. I've posted on here twice looking for advice and both times you have been less than cordial. If I ask for advice on here again feel free you keep yours to yourself.

Why is it that folks like you always post a 'butthurt' reply when we're honest with you? your history as stated by yourself isnt the worst but it still sucks. it shows a lack of maturity, poor decision making and an apparent need to please whoever youre hanging around at any particular moment.

youve asked for advice twice and keep getting the same reply. do you think if you keep posting youll get a favorable response which will make your background change?

for most agencies in the free world your history is an auto DQ. its your **** poor choices that have led you to this point, not ours. this is the real world pal, there are THOUSANDS of folks out there who think they can do this job or that they are somehow 'owed' the opportunity to prove themsleves as LEO's.

this isnt a job where you get a 'do-over'. your poor choices in the field can get yourself or someone else killed at the extreme end of the scale and sued/fired at a minimum. your history shows you cant be trusted with split second, life changing decisions.

im sure you can get a job as a product tester at Redi-Whip....

I'm glad that you don't. But I have read the standards for the departments I want to apply to and nothing in my past is going to DQ me, the drug use and criminal charge is far enough back that it won't. Yes I have made mistakes, and I'll be the first to stand up and say so. But I don't think that after decade of flying right and working hard I should be judged based on my mistakes as a kid. I guess I am having some malfunction with the excuses....Cause I am not tying to make excuses but having major issues with them coming off as excuses...I need to learn how to describe the incidents with out them coming off like I am. I will take responsibility fully for my actions but am having trouble here.
