  • Looking for some advice.

First off I would like to say thanks to anyone who responds.

So let’s get into this. I'm not perfect and had made my fair share of mistakes. In 2001 I received two speeding tickets, nothing sense then. In late 2001 I had a family member pass away and being young and being so close to the family that passed on I started making some bad choices. Nothing to bad but I allowed my buddies put on a 21st birthday party for me which I normally would not have done. In the end there were underage drinkers at my party and I pled guilty to misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Other than a MIP in 1999 while I was in High School I have been in no other trouble.

No drugs in over 11 years, no issues at work, but I've had a hard time getting hired on. I have applied to the two local agencies a few times (one 3 the other twice). I will not leave the local area because my two year old daughter is here and sense she is the coolest thing sense sliced bread I will not leave. I recently spoke to the head of HR of one of the agencies and he suggested volunteering which I have sense done, I have also been accepted to the citizen academy of the other. I have finished college and have a BS in Criminal Justice, and am out of ideas on what else I can do.

Is there anything else I can do that would help my chances of getting hired?? Thanks again

It's not the will to win that matters...everyone has that. It's the will to prepare to win that matters.

I don't mean to minimize my part, it was my party and will be the first to stand up and take full responsibility. No hard drugs.

Learn the difference between sense and since. What are your test scores? It's a very tough market right now.

You were advised to volunteer. You stated you are doing so.

Continue this...........................volunteer with several agencies if you have time available

Big Brothers, Red Cross (become an instructor), show some community involvement.

Other than that-----------------keep applying. There are MANY agencies within driving distance from CS................limiting yourself two the "big two" will lessen your chances of being hired. If you have been turned down 3 times by one agency and 2 times by a second agency---------------you might want to start to take the hint that they really are not interested in you.

Look at some of the smaller towns in the area------you would be surprised the number that are or could be looking for officers.

You might want to start there. sense/since then/than...............little mistakes in grammar and detail are looked at in the hiring process too.......

I have been thinking that same thing recently, but I have a dream to do this for one of these two agencies and don't plan on giving up.

Pretty much everything you listed is called "being a kid". Nothing is going to DQ you, just be honest. However, as mentioned above there are a few things that count against you, but nothing that's going to sink you.

I don't see any real "killers" in your past, but I do see some minimization and justification. Those are two fancy words for "excuse". We all own our mistakes. We take full responsibility for them. OK, lecture over. In addition to volunteering, look into the possibility of becoming a Reserve Officer. In all likelihood you'll undergo the same Background Investigation and hiring process a regular officer applicant would. Keep your options open with respect to agencies, and don't be afraid to apply at more than one. In the meantime, continue all your efforts at good citizenship. Your LE dream isn't likely to begin immediately, but you probably have a shot. Go for it, and good luck.
