  • Group Oral Examination?

So, I'm applying to a local (suburban) police department here in the Chicago area. I was just notified today that I passed the written and physical abilities tests. The next step, a week from now, is what they call the "Group Oral Examination". I've been reading this forum for a few months now, and I've read all about oral "boards" and oral interview and am somewhat familiar with them. However, I'm not sure what this group oral exam is, or what to make of it. This is what it says in the "police applicant fact sheet":
STEP FOUR: GROUP ORAL EXAMINATION. Only those who have attended orientation, and passed the written and physical abilities test will receive a letter of admission from the Board [of Fire and Police Commissioners], giving the place, date and time of the Group Oral Examination. The letter and your drivers [sic] license must be presented to gain admission. The score of this test [emphasis added by ChiCity] if forty percent (40%) of the total scores.
The next step of the process is the establishment of the eligibility list, which is done by combining the written exam score (60%) and the "group oral examination" (40%). BI, polygraph, medical, drug test, and "final oral interview" all occur after your name comes up on the list.

So, with all that being said, what do you think this "group oral examination" is going to be, and how should I prepare? Can I prepare?

A little bit about myself, this is pretty much the first first PD I've applied to (went to an orientation for a different one, but didn't pass the fitness test), so I have no police oral interview experience. Pretty much all I have to go on is what I've read on these forums. One thing I do know, is that I will wear a suit. I will do as much research as I can on the department (not a whole lot of info out on there on the internets about it, though), and I will see if I can do a ride-along sometime between now and then. Anything else?

    Thanks,
    Chi

    Anything?

To summarize a long post, I'm wondering what the difference between an oral interview and a "group oral examination" could be? Is it going to be a test? Why as a group? What should I expect?

Chicity, I assume that the group oral examination is the panel interview. I had three individuals sit in on my first and second one (the second one is with the agency that hired me). My first one was similar to my first but somethings were radically different.

For one thing, make sure that you have copies of your employment history and criminal/driving record with you, so that you can refer back to those if you are asked questions about those. You are probably going to be asked why you want to go into this profession, and why you would be an asset to the department and things like this. You probably will be asked to list some of your good attributes and bad ones as well. My advice, make sure the bad ones aren't too bad! You also will be given some scenarios in which you will be asked to explain how you would handle such situations. Some of the scenarios more than likely will have to do with use of force and/or domestic situations. Don't worry, they realize that you haven't been trained in criminal law yet and there isn't just one right answer.

LIke I stated earlier, my first panel interview had some differences than the first. The three men started to bicker at me about various things. I almost felt as though I was being interrogated! I don't know if this was a planned thing to see if I could put up with things like this in a reasonable manner or what? A friend of mine went through an interview with the same agency and he said that they didn't do that to him, so, I don't know? My second panel review was a lot better. I didn't get bickered at and the two LT's and one SSGT seem to be much more professional. Anyway, just be honest. They will ask you if there is anything that you need to change on your application and notify then of and they probably will be asking you a few things that are asked on you application. Good Luck!

AH, I see. I thought it would be a group of applicants being given an oral exam at the same time, but now I see that it probably means an exam where the applicant is interviewed by a group of people.
        Thank you for the insight.

The group interview will most likely be about four people reading from a pre scripted list of questions. One person will ask the question and all four will take notes on your response. At the end of the day they will get together and compare notes to see who had the best responses.

Think about the interview from their perspective. If you were in charge of hiring a police officer what are the top twenty questions that you might want to ask? If it will help you prepare write down a bunch of questions and practice your answers. It's not rocket science, they won't ask you to do algebra. Why do you want this job, why do you think that you would be good at this job, give me an example of a time you had a conflict with your supervisor, stuff like that.

Thank you very much FireFinder. I think I'd rather just interview by myself, but I'll do whatever I have to.
