  • Myopia- My bad eyes

When I was about 12 years old I took the same old eye test I always had to take, only something was different. I couldn't see as well as I used to be able to. After that I had to get glasses. I've been wearing glasses ever since because I'm a bit short sighted...well more than a bit. While no eye specialist has said this to me, that I recall, I think I have myopia.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myopia

From My Junior year in High school till my Freshman year in College, I had one pair of glasses. When I lost those, I had to get a new pair so I could actually see the chalk board in class. Turns out my eyesight was the same as it was 2 years previous to that, which I think is a good sign because it hasn't degenerated at all. I am still wearing the same glasses that I have...it's been nearly 2 years since my last pair, and I'm probably due for a new pair. I took a physical for work and I only got 20/25 on the vision test while wearing my glasses. This distressed me, because I usually get 20/20 on the distance. I could see the close up vision test perfectly, without glasses, however.

My question is, does Myopia disqualify me from becoming a LEO? With my glasses I can see nearly perfectly, and without them I can "see" everything, it's just that things get blurry at a distance and It's hard to read letters and words on signs at a distance.

I know I've seen several local Police Officers wearing glasses, but I'm just worried that I'm not eligible to be an Officer because of my vision.

Though I'm not a police officer, I wear glasses and never thought of it being a potential DQ. From what I understand, as long as your vision is correctable with glasses or contacts, your OK.

So, wear your glasses, and its no problem.

It is a problem and hell of frustrating as I have worn glasses since Junior high and got a new pair last month since my old ones got scratched up. I found out my uncorrected vision was 20/200. I was like you and never thought about vision as being a dq as long as you could see 20/20 with your glasses. I found out from one agency that glasses are fine as long as your uncorrected is no worse than 20/100. So I had to go back to the eye doctor and get contacts as they waive the uncorrected vision requirements if you wear contacts for 6 months. Problem is the other agency I want is lot stricter. Their uncorrected is 20/40 if you wear glasses, and they require you to wear contacts for 1 whole year.

I just looked at the St. Louis PD web page, not where I want to work, and it said
Minimum of 20/200 correctable to 20/20 with normal color vision
Which is kind of good, but kind of bad. As my last test of 20/25 was not good enough, though I probably need new glasses. I'm not sure what my uncorrected vision is, but it's something like 20/100-20/200. Either way not very good.

On Contacts: I really hate putting things near my eyeballs. one of my biggest fears or phobias is just touching my eyeball. I hate putting in eye drops and such, but I suppose if that's what it's going to take I can do it. I imagine getting pepper sprayed is going to be one hell of a day...although I got a brief preview into that when a glob of body wash flew of the cap of the bottle and straight into my open eye one morning. Worst pain I've ever felt.

my eyesight is horrible altho it corrects to 20/20. your vision is likely correctable to 20/20 or else you'd already know it's not. you need to have your vision checked at least once a year. as to a DQ, it depends on the agency. check the policy with each agency you're interested in, i've seen many different permutations in the vision requirements. and there's always LASIK, which i'm scheduled for on Friday.

how long is your hiring process supposed to take because most agencies won't pass you on the medical if the Lasik is within 1 year. If it's 6 months then should be fine.

People, this is ask a cop not ask a civilian.

Please if you are not a sworn LE officer dont respond to the OP, you can just PM them.....ok?

just think about this saying....."ONLY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS CAN *REPLY* TO POSTS IN 'ASK A COP'
All Others BANNED on FIRST Offense"

its at the top of the ask a cop section.

Sorry for answering his question. I am in his shoes though and found out from calling recruiters that yes uncorrected vision does matter if you wear glasses and that it can greatly differ by the city.
