How often do some of your respective departments require practicing and qualification with your weapons? Do you usually just get your practice in then? Or do you take some of your days off and go to the range and get extra practice in?

We have to shoot handgun every other month, shotgun twice a year, so no handgun during shotgun months = handgun qual 4 times a year shotgun qual 2.
Most officers shoot more than that. We have a bonus qual system, different sequence than regular qual, harder actually. There are four ranks you can earn at bonus shoot if you qualify; marksman, sharpshooter, expert and distinguished expert. At each rank you get a "bonus pay" for shooting at that level every pay period you get $4 extra (not an hour, every two weeks $104 a year) for marksman and it goes up for each rank. Your rank is good for one year from the time you qualified with that score. A lot of guys shoot bonus in lieu of regular qual since bonus still counts for your every other month shoot and you get a little (very little) extra $$ and a cool little medal to wear on your uniform. Currently I have the sharpshooter medal, silver...stupid silver, I want gold.....I'm going to the range....Last edited by mtxpro752; 07-29-2008, 03:18 PM.Originally Posted by VegasMetro

My department only shoots once a year. I wish we did more, but we don't. I shoot IDPA pretty regularly, and that is my practice. Its rare for me to go to the range when I'm not shooting a match, but I do try for at least one match a month.-Landric

We shoot every year.
Depending on your score you get the gold Marksman, Expert, or Sharpshooter badges with State Seal on themThe sheep generally do not like the sheepdog. He looks a lot like the wolf. He has fangs and the capacity for violence. The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed.

The agency qualified 4 times a year with all weapons. When I was on the job, I usually shot USPSA twice a month, and practiced one day every weekend. I have shot about 10,000/year almost from the start of my career in 1970.
When I was on the National Pistol Team, I shot 30,000/year just of PPC.
Now, I have a range on my ranch - heck, I'm going shooting NOW!
Why so much? Because you never know when today will be THE DAY!"A man who has nothing which he cares about more than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the existing of better men than himself."

Qaulify every six months on shotgun and pistol. Once per year right now on patrol rifle although that will probably be increased to twice a year. Problem and expense with getting .223 ammo I'm told. We usually have at least two additional opportunites for pistol and one for patrol rifle outside of the normal quals

we qualify 4 times per year. in that 4 times there is usually a low light course and a tactical course (shooting from vehicle, around barriers, etc.
they run quarterly rifle/shotgun/back up gun courses but you only need to qualify on those once per year.
we've got 700+ officers so shooting 4 times were year is a logistical nightmare for the range guys i'm surePerseverate In Pugna

Our dept. requires us to qualify only twice a year on pistol and shotgun. Those are the only times the range is open for reg. patrol officers. Unless you're in tac (you get to practice once a month), we don't even get to practice. We have to spend our own time and money on ammo and going to a range!!Pretty horrible if you ask me! KC had open range every friday morning............... The things you suffer moving to a smaller dept.............

I shoot any gun at any opportunity so I'll shoot my issued pistol more often than departmental qualifications. I also practice aiming and drawing as well as hand exchanges quite often. However, we have a two day qualification every spring and fall where, in addition to shooting, we go over legal updates, defensive tactics, etc.
My previous department required quarterly qualifications, yet the opportunity was there to do it every month.
