  • Hurricanes?

So there was a thread on here about tornados and severe thunderstorms, but I was wondering what do your departments do and what changes to everyday work when a hurricane comes. I plan on applying in South Florida and was just wondering what I would eventually go through.

Well, if it is a big enough hurricane, the entire town, most of the structures, and lots of the people, are destroyed (ask me how I know).

When hurricanes come, we go about our daily lives and watch it unfold on the news.

We hang out in the station and laugh as **** blows away...

And then **** and moan when we have to answer 1,000 Alarm calls.

The difference, though, is that the sheepdog must not, cannot and will not ever harm the sheep. Any sheepdog who intentionally harms the lowliest little lamb will be punished and removed.

We come to the PD with our stuff and will stay there until released. Work 12s, off 12s (sleeping and eating at PD). FEMA normally ends up footin' the bill and I change my deductions to 10 that pay period to keep most the money. Yep. Hurricane season is just a way of life around here.

I don't agree with your opinion, but I respect its straightforwardness in terms of wrongness.

Once winds hit about 30/35mph, we're told to "seek shelter" where ever we can *hint*, and calls for service are suspended (unless an officer needs help, but they shouldn't be out either) then a curfew is passed on the affected area. Have you ever seen Miami without any traffic at midnight? It's beautiful.... the only cars on the road at night are patrol cars. But during the day at 95 degrees, and 99% humidity, directing traffic due to no electricity for 8 hours in the sun it's not all fun and games and it's alot worse than it sounds.

And in a week, the mosquitos are coming....
