That is classic....I will have to start using that one (I don't care of the garbage man line).

We too are required to carry our badge and creds when carrying off-duty.
The powers that be within your department could mean many things. I've seen newer officers with their badge and gun visible while shopping in the mall in a T-Shirt and jeans. They may have been giving you tips on proper concealment.

Just redirect the conversation onto another topic or change the subject. Thats what I always do. Then if it comes down to not being able to get out of it, tell them the truth. You are in L.E. And don't be specific. I guess your question also would depend on who ask what you do. Normally when you are a "ROOK" such as yourself you are exploding to tell others that you are a cop but any experienced officer will tell you keeping the subject on the down low is always a good idea.

A buddy and me out at a bar used "we work for Six Flags as Batman and Robin." My dad was the old dancing guy on the commercials and thats how we got the job. Had people buying shots for us most of the night.

Our policy says the same, but what are they going to do?

I usually say, I'm in between jobs, or I work for the state, assisting the needy.

I've used 'trash collector' before, but since I am techy I usually say I work in computers.

When I used to work security (it could apply to telling people I'm a cop too), I used to tell people I was a "Crisis Intervention Specialist". Most of the time if someone asks what I do, if they're not an idiot I'll just tell them I'm a cop. Otherwise, normally, it's "I'm a city worker".

Thankfully, I can say "I work at the airport" and I usually don't get another question about it.

I dont need to carry my badge to still function as a police officer. If by some chance I get robbed off duty, I dont want the idiot to open my wallet and immediately see that Im an officer. My creds sit behind other cards so at first glance I look like "Joe Citizen." Hopefully that buys me enough time to get to my weapon. Its a matter of self preservation, nothing more. You do things your way, I mine....
