Good afternoon, why do you all think Police Departments are having problems hiring? Thanks

  • #2
Are you on the job yet? If not, how many different PDs and applications have you put in?

Your agency must be the only one in the country........................I have friends all over the country stating that finding qualified candidates is like finding hens teeth

          • #8
Them not deeming applicants qualified who actually doesn't have anything against them to not be qualified. If experience doesnt matter why shouldnt someone who meets all the qualifications not be given a chance and hired? I have a friend who has no record, no drugs, has good references, good work history, good credit, and he's been trying for like 4-5 years now, hasn't gotten in, and has applied to various agencies.

it's a really tough process. Every department is looking for something different. When denying you sometimes the department never tells you what made you unqualified. That discouraging to some.

              1. Why are you answering questions when you’re not a sworn officer?
              2. Meeting the minimum qualifications to apply is not the same as being someone they actually want to hire.

This is the "Ask a Cop" section. If you're not a cop or a retired cop, you have no business responding to other people's threads in here.

Not only should you not be answering in this section ....................you obviously do not know anything about the LE hiring process.

Just because someone meets the minimum hiring requirements, that is not necessarily indicative of if they actually are qualified for the job of a cop. Minimum hiring requirements (what is normally advertised in the job posting ) is not really the qualifications. It's just what HR says you have to meet before you are considered for the job.
A candidate becomes QUALIFIED for the job after they have completed the selection process------That means written testing, physical testing, psychological testing, and maybe a couple hiring boards. The candidates who come out of that process are the qualified candidates who are available for hire

              Amen.

And I think a lot of potential applicants don't understand that the minimum standards to submit an application, are just the minimum standards to submit an application. The actual performances required to graduate from academy, are MUCH higher.

For example, the agency I retired from, listed a 1.5 mile run time of about 16 minutes or so, to apply. On our first day of PT, those who were only capable of a 14-15 minute 1.5 mile run, were left vomiting on the side of the road, and that was the last time we ever saw them. I graduated with a 9:28, and there were only two guys slower than me.

Toplaw100, you ARE allowed to start your OWN thread in the "Ask a Cop" section, to ask your question, and you CAN respond to your OWN thread(s) in the "Ask a Cop" section.

Sunday is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a somber day of tribute to the LEOs who have fallen in the past year.

619 names will be added to the wall this year, which is remarkably high (most years the number is around 150 names). But when you consider 147 names are from old record searches and 319 were covid deaths, only 153 officers died in 2021 from traditional line-of-duty deaths- then 2021 was much more in sync with statistical norms.

Something else jumped out... look at the states with high officer deaths vs low officer deaths and there is a pattern: the south was more deadly than the north. Compare Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas to Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Ohio. A numbers aberration... or a sign that southern hospitality is a myth when it comes to police?

Also consider that not all of the Covid deaths are listed. My agency has had more than a few.

Not a single one is listed as a LODD
