  • Training FAIL?

As a non-cop, still my first thought watching this video was, did these officers not follow their training? Where are their battons? I've watched freeway chases where with cooperating suspects and a huge number of officers they still don't get near the suspect. Makes me wonder how they got into this situation seemingly so unaware of the possibility of being assaulted? Was the officer on top.. reaching for his walkie.. while his partner was taking blows?
Insult to injury: the first sentence in the article, '..officers are being praised by witnesses for their restraint..'??? I'm embarrassed to live among democratic socialist MFers who would say such a thing. IMHO, this suspect should have been choked out as a matter of the officer's survival instincts and the 'ban' on chokeholds be dammed. These 2 officers were very lucky.
A good Samaritan helped detain a dangerous suspect who was attacking two LAPD officers with a chain and padlock.

That’s easy to say when your family’s livelihood and your personal freedom aren’t at stake.

As peace officers we’re sworn to uphold the law, even when it makes doing the job essentially impossible. You elected your legislatures and executives... you live with the consequences.

If you think you can do better suit up and show us how.

    ...otherwise, **** off.

Judging only by the short video clip, and what the suspect was assaulting the officers with, lethal force would defintely be justified.

Now look at the skin colors of everyone involved. Had a shooting occurred, what do you think the narrative would be?

Training isn't the issue. Public perception is. Don't be embarrassed for the officers. Be embarrassed for the people that live among you.

They should have shot him, but then you'd have to deal with a bunch of racists accusing the officers of being racist, and politically motivated brass attempting to appease the mob by hanging the officers out to dry...

When the police can't / wont protect themselves, what chance do citizens have?

They have the chance they voted to have.

Without benefit of seeing what led up to where this video began, it is not fair to judge the officers on what we see here. We don't have any of the information the officers had or didn't have when they made contact with this suspect so none of us, sworn or civilian, can say for certain whether or not this is any type of fail. (There are tons of videos out there where we see the entire incident and know for sure when mistakes were made. This isn't one of those videos.)

That being said, you may be absolutely correct, they may have made mistakes that got them to the point we see in the video and if so, they will be dealt with internally, after they come back from their IOD injuries. It would make no difference that citizens are "praising" them or not. If they need additional training to help ensure they don't make the same mistakes in the future, they will get it.

Like others have said before me, unless the suspect is actually shooting at you and it's on video, in this current environment officers may be a bit leery using their firearms. It shouldn't be that way but people seem to forget, police officers are human beings too.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that I would have been resorting to lethal force. Fire me, charge me, or whatever. Not playing the silly PC games with a guy like that. Period!!!
