Did you not agree to a non-disclosure before attending the oral board?

There is only one answer to that question, and it's not rocket surgery...

Reach in to the appropriate pouch on your duty belt and hand that thug a hug. Bullets are expensive. Hugs cost a lot less and would result in less media scrutiny.
Getting shot hurts! Don't under estimate the power of live ammo. A .22LR can kill you! I personally feel that it's best to avoid being shot by any caliber. Your vest may stop the bullet, but you'll still get a nice bruise or other injury to remember the experience.

I answered that I would have to rely on the training that I received from the academy and during FTEP.

        That's called a 'non-answer'.

You won't be progressing further with the department but I do see a bright future for you in politics....

The correct answer, fwiw, to such scenario is,

"I would quickly exhaust my magazines in order to protect my partner from getting his head caved in."

Discussion by the officers conducting the oral board:
”He gives a vague non-answer to a simple scenario. That and he’s clearly hesitant to use force.”
            ”Yep, he’s indecisive.”
”Okay, then it’s settled. He’s the next chief.”

If the poster couldn't make the immediate decision that deadly force is required to save the downed officer from getting beaten to death by a baseball bat he seriously needs to look for another profession in his life..

I recently completed my first OB and during the test there was a scenario question asked that really hit me unexpectedly. The scenario was:

You receive a call for help over the radio, another officer is being attacked by a man with a baseball bat. You are the first to arrive on scene and see a 6'3" 330lb male standing over an unconscious officer. The male has the bat raised above his head and begins to swing it at the officer on the ground. What actions do you take?

I am still only an applicant and have never been in that situation. Would lethal force be the appropriate course of action in this situation? I would be fearing for the safety of the unconscious officer on the ground and believe that the suspect is about to severely harm the officer on the ground.

I answered that I would have to rely on the training that I received from the academy and during FTEP. Taking a life is not an easy thing but if that was the only option left open to me, I would use lethal force to protect the life of a fellow officer. Especially when I believed that the male suspect was about to severely harm the officer who could not defend himself.

If lethal force is not justified in this situation what would be a better course of action?
Like with a baseball bat? Over the head? While you're unconscious and defenseless on the ground? While your partner ponders the correct course of action?

"Let him hold one!" Maybe more if he doesn't stop immediately.

Look at the bright side, if the downed officer has better gear than you do, and he’s one of the unpopular guys, you could always thank the thug after he’s in custody, then scrap it out with the other responding officers while you spit up the downed officer’s gear.,

                            Stupidity of the question?

How about stupidity of the post? You DID sign a non-disclosure agreement...

Perfect example of why it's a punk move to delete a post. Somewhere there is an applicant wondering the same thing. They could use the information. Fortunately it was quoted.
And yeah, I'm wondering about someone that signed a Non Disclosure agreement. So much for what your word is worth.
