  • what should i do

i was cut short in the process with a police department at the oral board. they said they liked me but that my life experience isnt enough being 21 years old. BUT they did offer me the chance to go into the process of being a jail officer. this place is very expensive to travel too should i take the jail job process or join the military which is something ive wanted to do and get a actual life experience

The offer of becoming a DO w/ them is a respectful offering given your age and application. I'd take that for a year or so to build upon your skill sets. On the off hand going Military does give you preference points towards the hiring process albeit your commitment for a few years obviously. Keep in mind being a DO you can easily apply for other agencies as well and not have to wait.

The military doesn’t exist to give you a cop job.
Now go home and get your shine box!

Joining the military is a big decision, and no one can make that choice for you. Maybe start with a pros and cons list each one. They must have seen some potential in you, or they wouldn't have made the offer.

There are a lot other ways to get life experience other than the military.

Jail work is a good stepping stone for some move into full time law enforcement.

Based on your posting history here in the past few months, you should be exceptionally thankful they offered you a position at all.

"Detorit" police is still hiring, btw...

Sounds as if you have to travel a fair distance from where you live simply to get this entry-level position. Up to you, but think long and hard about doing that. If you can not get onto a closer Agency, and you have no other employment prospects, then, sure, sign-up with the military, but you obviously need to mature more. Good luck to you.

Were you considering the military before this? The military was a great option for me as I wasn't accomplishing much in school and it really helped me figure out what I wanted to do with my life, among other things. Don't enlist just to qualify for a job.

If serving in the military is something that actually interests you, it can be quite helpful during subsequent law enforcement applications. As many others have mentioned, however, there are plenty of additional ways to prepare for a career in law enforcement.

My advise is this: if you actually could see yourself enjoying the military enough to make a career out of it, give it a 'go'. If you're otherwise unsure, I'd recommend exploring a different option. You might try applying for a smaller police department where you could spend a few years gathering training and experience to build your skill set and, as a result, your resume. You'll probably make peanuts and be bored for at least half of your shift but you'll still learn valuable things and it will provide you with an opportunity to apply at more desirable departments while you're working. Just remember; No matter what you do from now until then, work hard and be good. Any respectable background check will explore and discover exactly the type of worker you were before.

                      Best of luck!

I tell many folks that are interested to do a small hitch in the military, to see if they want to stay. No harm in doing 4/6 and getting out.

The military is a fine choice BUT it isn't there as an employment agency.

If you want to serve, by all means sign up... BUT keep in mind, you have to go where they want, do what they want and be who they want for years.

Many people go in, get disgruntled and disillusioned and come out worse off than if they had never gone in... an Article 15/ Office Hours/ Captain's Mast counts as a federal conviction that will follow you everywhere for the rest of your life, and while it isn't insurmountable you'll be explaining it to potential employers for decades... and anything less than an Honorable discharge the same.

The detention officer job is a good route... you will learn A LOT that will apply on the road.

A third option is college... possibly with a reserve or Guard enlistment.
