hello, i'm currently in college and in about one year i will graduate and i will try to became a cop..
the problem is that i'm dating this guy and we are looking forward to move in together , but he smokes weed, he never smokes in front of me or have it when he is with me, he knows he could get me in trouble...
my question is... how would this affect me?
does moving together would be bad?

If he is serious about you, then he will quit. If he isn’t, do you want to be with someone like that?

If he won’t quit and you want to stay with him, it’s unlikey you will get a job in LE.

Just because weed may be legal at the state level, it’s not at the federal level, and most agencies would see your Bfs use as problematic.

You do realize that you can get charged with possession if weed is found in a vehicle registered to you...or a vehicle you're driving...or in the common area of a shared residence? Where is he going to keep his weed once you move in together? Even if he "tries" not to get you in trouble...sooner or later it might happen anyway. As a cop you'll be expected to use sound judgment. Might want to start now...

Not much to add that hasn't already been said. Life decisions and all. If he knows you're trying to become a police officer and won't stop smoking weed then he's not showing you much respect. The odds are against you enough as (assuming off your name) a female officer; the divorce rate for female cops married to non-cops is close to 100%. You don't need the added trouble of someone who doesn't respect what you do. Suddenly a few years in he gets half your pension and you've wasted X number of years.

I know the trend is to decriminalize possession, but I'm on the side of medical use ONLY. Intake of THC increases the chance of mental health problems. Most know the 'Animal House' quote, "will I go schizo?" when one of the characters is about to partake for his first time. That movie is relatively 'old school' but its negative effects on mental health have been widely documented WAY before its release in the '70s and the WAY before the time period depiction of the early '60's.

My son-in-law works in a dispensary in Portland, so I'm sure he and my daughter are frequent partakers. I hope and pray they won't fall into the percentile of those negatively effected. In addition, I hope and pray they aren't ever under the influence while operating a vehicle.

Also, I always rant to the drug users/abusers I run into, and the gist is that narcotics and others substances negatively effect their reproductive system as well as unborn children. The negative effects could be as small as your child have learning difficulties, but other than up to death, the horrific birth defects are just that...horrific! My late sister-in-law worked with these babies, many addicted, and others with their obvious birth defects.

In reference to my late sister-in-law, who died from pancreatic cancer, I had no care in the world she consumed edibles in her later stages, and I actually recommend them to her. Even if THC didn't do anything physically to help her, I hoped she would at least but under the placebo effect.

Another rant...many significant others, mainly women, get popped for something related to their male significant other. Just as others have posted, there is a possibility you will get popped for possession. It is also a possibility that if he begins to do it around you that you may consume it secondhand, and then get popped on a pee pee test.

I can rant on and on about this, but I will stop here. I know this is an old post, but I still wan to say please just say "no" if you want to have a career in LE.

I like you, but I have some strong feelings on the subject.

I do not wish to offend, but let's call it what it is- your daughter is married to a drug dealer. That includes all of the risks that go along with associating with drug dealers. Like someone following Jeff Spicoli home and putting a gun to your daughter's head to get him to take them to the pot store to give them all the drugs and/or cash- it's a cash only enterprise since marijuana is still a federal drug crime in all 50 states, so they can't use regular financial institutions like banks and credit card companies.

There are many aspects of the DUI thing that are a problem. For starters, we all know that every pot head on the planet drives while under the influence. So not only is Jeff Spicoli risking her life every time he drives her somewhere, but every other pot head in Oregon is a risk to her life. And it's not just pot- Oregon has also decriminalized Schedule-1 narcotics like heroin, meth, and cocaine. Insurance companies know this, which is why car insurance costs more in places where states have decided not to prosecute drug criminals. Marijuana stays in the system for up to 30 days, so Jeff Spicoli and your daughter are basically DUI every single time they get behind the wheel.

And of course, drug criminals are prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms, so your daughter lives in a high-crime city with no way to protect herself. Jeff Spicoli is obviously so weak of character, that he chooses getting high over being able to protect your daughter.

My heart breaks for you, brother. Being a parent is hard.

If it would not be too bold for me to say this, I hope that she comes to her senses, dumps Jeff Spicoli, gets off illegal drugs, and moves to a free state, maybe closer to you.

I find it amazingly ironic how we have such a hard push against tobacco use today, but a swing toward the normalization of marijuana...despite strong medical facts that smoked marijuana has significantly more carcinogens and cancer-related chemicals than even tobacco. The same people who toke it up on a regular basis tend to be the ones who look at someone lighting up a cigarette like they're torturing puppies.

Also, I'm calling BS on the whole "medical marijuana" thing. The reality is, "medical marijuana" was always just a cover to adapt society to legalization. Does marijuana potentially have medical applications? Yes. But I've never had a doctor tell me, "hey, go buy your medication from some guy and smoke it up as much as you see fit...no need to worry about dosage or drug strength." If "medical marijuana" was legit, then people would be prescribed THC pills (yes, they exist, and they have almost no psychoactive effect while retaining the medicinal effects of THC).

That was also my understanding since the beginning of this medical marijuana debate. THC pills were the solution to any benefit of medical marijuana, but that get deflected somehow. Before a court shot down medical marijuana in my state, there was a dispensary nearby with the word 'High' incorporated in it's name. Why would a medical marijuana dispensary incorporate the word 'High' if not to attract the dopers?

I always hear from "medical marijuana patients" how it's good for glaucoma and persistent pain and chemo patients. Yet, people who flash a medical marijuana card to me seem to always be in perfect health, usually in their 20's and fitting the stereotypical "stoner" profile.

Look, I'll happily debate marijuana legalization, but let's drop the bs "medical marijuana" act already. Those who partake know what it is. The public (generally) knows what it is. The cops know what it is. Nobody's being fooled.

It wont look great. In backgrounds they go through every part of your life. Especially the people you associate with and significant others. While I am sure it's not a disqualifier it doesn't reflect well on you. Where I live 1/3 or more of the population smokes. I would say no one would ever be hired if someone you know or hang out with smokes weed.

On the topic of marijuana... I'm very green in my career. I've already responded to many crashes involving weed. Including fatals. Everyone has the right to do what they want privately. Don't endanger the public.
