CCW at 18?

Hello all, I hope I'm posting in the right thread here.
I will be moving to Alabama this year and I was wondering if packing.org is accurate in saying that I can get my CCW permit at age 18 instead of 21. Does anyone here know of this happening? Do you think a responsible 18 year old would have any issues getting approval from the Sheriff?
Any insight would be appreciated.

CCW permits in Alabama is really a misnomer. Alabama requires that if you wish to carry a pistol outside of your "fixed abode, or place of business", that you obtain a license from the Sheriff of your home county. This license is good for one year, and is valid anywhere in the state. Most, if not all Sheriff's Departments will require you to be 21 years of age in order for you to be issued a Pistol License. The license does permit concealed carry, on your person(with some restrictions as noted on the license) or in your automobile.To recieve a Pistol Permit,you must never have been convicted of a felony, or crime of violence in any state, which would be a felony or crime of violence if committed in Alabama. When you arrive in Alabama, check with the Sheriff's Dept in your county of residence with regard to applying for and recieving a Pistol License. Understand too, that carrying a pistol without a license, except in your home or place of business is an arrestable offense.

Thanks, so am I to understand that you think that it's unlikely for me to be approved?
I have a clean record and am as far away from being a "gangbanger" as you can get, so I shouldn't have any trouble in that aspect. I should also be in St. Claire county.
A couple more quick questions, VA has an ambiguous clause on concealed carry on your property. Does Alabama allow concealed carry on all of your property or only indoors? Did the "Castle Doctrine" law pass there?

The agency that you need to check with regarding a Pistol Permit is the St. Claire County Sheriff's Dept. With regard to carrying on your property. Probably not going to be a problem. Alabama is a predominately rural state, and many a time I've encountered farmers/ranchers carrying on their own property.

Federal firearms law do not premit anyone under 21 to carry a handgun, and anyone under is 18 to have a rifle or shotgun. So if you are under 21 states will not issue permits that conflict with federal law.

If your are only carrying on private property it is a whole differiant issue, check you state laws.

I think you're a little confused on this. Federal law doesn't allow you to purchase a handgun until 21 or a shotgun/rifle until 18, but it is legal to possess them. Alabama state law allows an 18 year old to obtain a pistol permit, but the Sheriff of each individual county can make the rules more strict. In the county that I live in, you have to be 19 to get a CCW. When I was 20, I had a CCW and carried, but I couldn't buy a handgun or ammunition.

This is the CCW manual for North Dakota. It says that applicants must be at least 18 to apply for the permit. If federal law preempts state law, what happens here? Does the permit only apply to knives or LTL weapons? Or does it mean that they can carry a rifle in their car but not a pistol on their person?

As long as I carry written permission from my parents, can carry whatever I want on property owned by them, handgun or rifle. I'm in VA now and this was the case in AZ as well.
Well, I can't carry a cop around on my back for one.
The same reason you carry a firearm, in case you need to defend yourself. I prefer not to put faith in the kindness of strangers when it comes to my life or my family's life. The house that my parents are looking at has been vandelized and had the dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, and outdoor grill grate stolen while unattended. Good neighbors eh?

I plan to get my criminal justice degree and become a LEO anyway, so it's more of a temporary safety.
