    Man it comes down to this, what's more important? Basically you have a 6 month academy with a mandatory set amount of hours needed to finish. You can miss a few days here and there, but not enough to go to drill. Then you have your FTO. Again a set amount of hours needed to be completed. It does you no good starting and stopping between phases. If you have to much of a break your department might start you either back a phase or back to phase 1. Not to mention you probation period might be 12 to 18 depending if the department counts academy time towards probation.

    it would be best to do any extended or even weekend military training once completed both the academy AND FTO. One gal came to my station, worked 2 maybe 3 months of fto and was deployed for 1 year and then did a 2nd. She came back and started all over.

    remember your on probation and an at will employee, departments will work with those who have completed all training but if you keep bouncing out during training your not giving the department much to work with

    We have a recruit who was being sent to a pre-deployment drill the last week of the Academy. He would be missing mandatory training denying him certification as an academy graduate, then he was going to be deployed in FTO. He had to get his Congressman involved because his superiors did not want to get involved. Crazy. And yes, L-1, his Probation is required to be extended. Unfortunately, not all agencies know that.

    We have a guy fresh off break in who deployed to Japan for about a month. I'm not sure how the brass would feel about 17 weeks though... thats a lot of time between getting your badge and hitting the road.

    I do not mind if the probation period is extended to cover the 17 weeks I miss. I only worry if I would be terminated just because of the 17 weeks leave.

    I did. He does not know either. Asked my BI, and I am still waiting for the response.

    My Corrections agency didn't suspend probation for military service-----it was "free"

    Most of the police agencies around here do infarct suspend probation------plus the Law Enforcement Academy administrative rules will also suspend the 12 month requirement from hire to going thru the Academy for any military service.

    In Iowa ( I know this particular question is about California) probation periods are set by the agency not by the state. and can be anywhere around 6 months to 18 months. One agency has a probationary period of 18 months AFTER completion of the Academy (which might take up to 12 months from hire date)

    He won't get it for free. The State of California requires that a specific number of hours be worked before probation is satisfied. If the time lost is so great that the minimum hours are not completed, probation will be extended. That's why I previously asked how long his training would be.

    Sir/Ma'am,

    I will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army National Guard this month. Most likely I would be going to the academy in either June or October. I know I need to complete a year of probation period before I secure the position permanently. If I leave the job during the probation period for 17 weeks of active duty training, would I be fired? Or would the CHP allow me to attend the AD training after the academy and before I officially start my probation period?
    The AD training is a requirement for my 1st Lieutenant promotion. I wish to complete the training within 18 months so I could be promoted on time.

    I appreciate your help.
