  • drug tested positive for valium need help I have a scrip

I'm freakin about this guys, and ladies. I have the job offer of a lifetime {at least for me} as a police with the federal reserve bank. Upon results of the drug test I'll be given my offer of employment. I took the wee-wee test confidently knowing that i dont take any kind of street drugs. Then two days later a lady from the drug testing firm tells me that I tested positive for Valium. I told her that I had a prescription for Valium because of trouble sleeping after being in Iraq. She said fax me a copy of the scrip which I did. I called her back and she said I'm good to go and that my scrips are legit.

Now does this mean even though I'm legally prescribed valium that the FED wont hire me if this lady tells them this information. Will they see me as a pariah, and decline the offer becuase I cant sleep at night due to seeing fallen comrades?

Just need some opinions. The valium therapy was intended for a short duration as my working at a correctional facility was bringing my anxiety up alot.

    Respectfully,

Generally, you are disqualified for taking illegal drugs. If you have a scrip, I wouldn't worry unless there is a history of mental illness for which you take medications that might be a concern.

Whew, thanks brother, I dont have any mental illnesses. If PTSD is a mental illness then yes I do, admittedly. But pardon my french, it ****s you up to see your buddies get wasted. If a cop has to shoot someone or sees his partner get wasted does the department treat him or her like a leper? I cant help my condition, and need a tool like valium to sleep at night.

      thanks for the fast reply.

Here I dragged this over from another thread. Having your post once will make it easier for you and us.

Slow down there buddy. There are laws that protect your privacy: called Hipaa. However your PTSD might be a concern

              First problem - you say:

which suggests you will only be taking the medication temporarily. But later you say:

which sounds like you are going to need to take it on a long term basis.

In any case, a medication induced impairment can place an officer, his co-workers and the people he protects at significant risk. There are too many possibilities to give you a one size fits all answer. However, if you go to:

              http://www.post.ca.gov/selection/pdf/AppendixA.pdf

you will see the concerns about employing an officer who takes valium.

Now, there is something else that stands out as well:

Reading between the lines, the tone and urgency of your wording suggests you are having a serious PTSD problem. Combine this with the meds required by your condition in order to sleep, and you stand a good risk of DQ either on the medical, the psych, or both, until the condition clears up.

In response to your question, if a cop is unable to function, or must take meds that can affect his job performance because he had to shoot someone or see his partner get wasted, departments usually do not treat him like a leper. However they don't kid themselves or the officer either. If the condition is temporary, the officer is usually placed on industrial disability leave until he recovers. But, if the condition appears to be permanent or will go on for more than a year, the officer usually gets a disability retirement.
Going too far is half the pleasure of not getting anywhere

Becareful as drugs tend to mask the problem, not solve them. Get some professional help and don't rely on the VA.

Good luck to you and thank you for your service.

The VA isnt the agency it used to be . You earned the right to use it so use it. The PTSD counsellors we have are well trained and have more experience with problems like yours than any private hospital out there. Just so you know I personally know several Police Officers that are patients with PTSD, it is something you can live and function with but without seeing a professional it will not go away. Good luck and if you need more information PM me and I'll see if I can help put you in touch with people in your area that can help.

BIGUN, I'm already signing paperwork to be seen by a V.A doc. Plus I'm a legionaire so if they give me a run around I'll have a congressman escort me himself personnally to see that I get the discreet treatment needed.

                        Thank you all so much.
