    Tell them you want to speak to the detective in charge of "helping murder mystry writers develop thier story line so that they can make a million dollars while the detective does all the hard work."

    I would go to your local dept and explain what you are doing. Then ask to interview a detective. The things you mentioned are correct, but every investigation differs. ie investigating a gang shooting is much different than investigating a home invasion homicide. Interviewing a detective would probably give you more accurate information, since on this site there are police officers from all over the country and some officers are from other countries. Policies and procedure differs from dept to dept.
