  • Can you smoke on duty?

I know a couple years back the Philadelphia, PA PD put a policy in effect that officers were not allowed to smoke cigarettes while on-duty and in uniform. I understand PA State Police police is you can not smoke or "chew" while anywhere "in the public eye".

I was just wondering if policies like those are common.

They are in some departments. My first deparment I worked for, we were not allowed to talk on out cell phones in our cruisers. I know of some surrounding departments, where they don't want you to even eat food in the car. Every department has their own policy, etc.

Can't smoke where the public can see you. What gets me the most is the nasty black/brown water bottles from people spitting their chew. If you want to chew fine but at least throw your filth away when you
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses....Hit it!

Not here and not in public buildings or in agency owned cars

We can't smoke at all. Our department has a no tabacco policy, and when
your hired you agree not to use tabacco products. The department did grandfather a few officers that were on prior, but they aren,t allowed to smoke in the cars, or on town property.

On my breaks and lunch; otherwise I'm on a post or in the car.

Our department has policy about not smoking in uniform. Most of the smokers still smoke in uniform, but retreat behind a shopping center to be hidden. There are more "dippers" than smokers that I've seen.

My department has no such policy but there are a few agencies around here that have no smoking policies for both on and off duty. You must sign a contract of course.

Anyone hired on a civil service PD in Massachusetts after 1988 can't smoke at all, on or off-duty. I know of two officers fired for violating this, both were upheld in court, one at the Supreme Judicial Court (state supreme court).

                        Can you smoke on duty

Alabama DPS prohibits smoking in department buildings, or while dealing with the public. As Troopers are issued "take home" cars, the individual officer determines whether or not smoking is permitted in his/her car.
