  • US Marshalls

Can anyone give me some advice on considering this institution as a permanent career? I've visited their website and I'm pretty impressed. Does anyone have any statistics on the marshalls, such as officer mortality rate and typical pay?

These past few months I've been torn between pursuing a career in the VSP or the Marshalls. It seems like the VSP would be a good place to start and then go to the marshalls. However, I really don't anything on this subject. So, any advice is welcomed and appreciated.

all i will say is that i am good friends with a marshall who is only 3yrs from retirement, he has talked to me several times about applying, but right now, all you can do is court security and prisoner escorts, nothing else, they are not approving more guys for fugitive squads, atleast not right now. plus they will only look at you, for now, if you are about to leave the military or are in their college intern program,,,

he also said that the fbi is stealing everyones thunder, according to him, he may be biased, but he said they are taking over everyones turf,,, but i cant swear to that.

I wouldn't hold my breath on the Marshals. They have not had open hiring in years. Testing for the last four years or so has been only available to active duty or recently seperated military personell. The rumor goes about every six months that they will open, but that has yet to happen.

As far as working there, unless you get hired as an 1811 you will be watching, transporting prisoners, or guarding courtrooms for the first few years. Good group of guys and most of the ones I know really enjoy it.

First of all, learn how to spell Marshal correctly, one L

Right now, the best way to get into the US Marshals Service (if not military or an intern) would be by becoming a DEO (detention enforcement officer) but I am not sure about any DEO hiring at the moment. There is a good chance of being promoted to 082 if you do a great job and get your name known in the district.

There will not be any open hirings of 082's in the near future. Anyone selected as a 082 will be from a list of applicants from 2-3 years ago, a DEO being promoted, or a co-op (intern). They were accepting applications from separating military a while back (Operation Shining Star) but I'm not sure of the status now.

The ONLY way to become a 1811 is to be a 082. It is a very competitive process.

There are some 082's who see the streets, it's not all court. It just depends on which district they work in.

I'm sorry, I know this section is for Ask a Cop, but I felt I knew a little information pertaining to this matter. My husband is a Deputy US Marshal.

          Thanks!

BTW, are you USMS Wife on another forum?

It's 1802 I believe. I haven't seen or heard anything about hiring any time soon though.

... yes- these forums just seem to suck me in
